Why Gas Prices Dropped money.cnn.com ^ | October 16 2006 | Nelson D. Schwartz

Posted on 10/16/2006 10:31:49 AM CDT by kellynla

(Fortune Magazine) -- If the recent plunge in gas prices is the result of a conspiracy by President George W. Bush to help the Republicans retain control of Congress, as 42 percent of Americans believe, according to one Gallup poll, a lot of Wall Streeters wish they'd been in on the plot.

So what really drove prices down - if not an Oliver Stone-worthy scenario involving the Commander-in-Chief, the House of Saud and Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson cajoling his cronies at Goldman Sachs to sink the crude market?

By late summer, hedge funds and other investors had poured billions into long positions in oil, gasoline, natural gas and the rest of what traders call the "energy complex," all betting on a replay of the severe 2005 hurricane season that sent prices soaring in the wake of Katrina and Rita. But one day after oil reached a monthly high of $76.98 a barrel on Aug. 7, government meteorologists downgraded their hurricane forecast and cautioned that a repeat of 2005 was "unlikely."

That announcement, combined with the end of the summer driving season and a recalibration of the Goldman Sachs (Charts) commodity index that reduced the weighting of gasoline, prompted speculators to head for the exits even faster than they'd piled in.

The switch in Goldman's basket of commodities had been previously announced by the firm, but that didn't stop the conspiracy theorists.

Worth a repeat.

What I'd like to know is, are there any of these so called conservatives that aren't going to vote to teach the GOP a lesson, here on FR???

Yes, there are a few, but I'll let them out themselves rather than naming them. They're idealists rather than realists, and are resisting acknowledging the real result of letting Democrats win.

I used to be one of them (back in the early 90s), but have learned my lesson. Vote the RINOs out in the primaries, but in the general election vote for any Republican rather than any Democrat.

Boy you got that right. RINOs are just RINOs, but these beltway "conservatives" are the real hemorrhoids that we're all having to tolerate, Laura Ingram being one of them. Being conservative and frustrated with some in the GOP and their lack of willingness to engage directly as a conservative and not giving in is one thing. Fighting those in the GOP and attacking them more then Democrats in the weeks before an election is inexcusable. Weak GOP'ers and RINOs are HANDS DOWN better then liberal Democrats. Every time all the time all day long.

Disagree. He may say he'll hold his nose and vote. The alternative will be unthinkable.
McCain is no more a conservative than Leahy, Kennedy, and the rest of the gang. Additionally, I think he has a screw loose.
Hey '08 is a long way off. Maybe North Korea's numerous underground tests will cause that really big earthquake we're told is coming. That will take our minds off of this, big-time.

Do we have a candidate in mind that would be more effective? From what I have seen, with Hastert as Speaker, the Republican Congress has maintained unity and resisted the Dems far better than the Senate has.

He has done that, which is a good whip position, but the House leader should be able to get movement in the Senate, like Newt did. A good leader should be able to appeal to the American public and motivate them to get their congressmen in line.

Why take your anger out on GOP by not voting and instead elect deranged, hate-filled Dems? Does that make any sense???

I guarantee Rush will endorse McCain if he faces off against the Beast in '08.

That is a no brainer. The problem I see in '08..... McCain loses and goes 3rd party thereby putting another clinton in the WH due to a candidate drawnig votes from the right towards a 3rd party candidate.....

Stevens is in his 80s and in poor healh and Ginsburg is in her 70s and in poor health, and Souter I believe also is in his 70s, the three oldest ones. They might not have a choice to keep drawing breath. Being a Justice is a hard job and they're shortening their life span by hanging on so tight. I doubt both of them will make it to January 2009.

They, and the MSM, have been saying for a while 'if the Democrats can't win now then can they ever win?' I hope they get nailed. I am doing my part...going and checking 'straight Republican' on my ballot.
