Why Gas Prices Dropped money.cnn.com ^ | October 16 2006 | Nelson D. Schwartz

Posted on 10/16/2006 10:31:49 AM CDT by kellynla

(Fortune Magazine) -- If the recent plunge in gas prices is the result of a conspiracy by President George W. Bush to help the Republicans retain control of Congress, as 42 percent of Americans believe, according to one Gallup poll, a lot of Wall Streeters wish they'd been in on the plot.

So what really drove prices down - if not an Oliver Stone-worthy scenario involving the Commander-in-Chief, the House of Saud and Secretary of the Treasury Hank Paulson cajoling his cronies at Goldman Sachs to sink the crude market?

By late summer, hedge funds and other investors had poured billions into long positions in oil, gasoline, natural gas and the rest of what traders call the "energy complex," all betting on a replay of the severe 2005 hurricane season that sent prices soaring in the wake of Katrina and Rita. But one day after oil reached a monthly high of $76.98 a barrel on Aug. 7, government meteorologists downgraded their hurricane forecast and cautioned that a repeat of 2005 was "unlikely."

That announcement, combined with the end of the summer driving season and a recalibration of the Goldman Sachs (Charts) commodity index that reduced the weighting of gasoline, prompted speculators to head for the exits even faster than they'd piled in.

The switch in Goldman's basket of commodities had been previously announced by the firm, but that didn't stop the conspiracy theorists.

Let's punish democrats for being 100% liberal.

If you say so, but personally I am more concerned about winning the election myself than making a change vis a vi Hastert, if we don't win it really won't matter will it?

Anybody know why Scarborough dropped out of politics?

Nobody is sure, it it appears to be his close relationship with Gary Condit, and their joint activities together....(Condit had a fun palace......er.... Condominium)

I think he was told certain facts that would be likely made public if he did not relinquish his seat.

That's the rumor anyway............

name one conservative Democrat, forget the leaning stuff. Joe Liberalman leans conservative on the war, but everything else leans liberal.

Other than Zoe Miller, name one conservative Dem.

He should step down because he is ineffective as a leader.

Do we have a candidate in mind that would be more effective? From what I have seen, with Hastert as Speaker, the Republican Congress has maintained unity and resisted the Dems far better than the Senate has.

I don't see Rush endorsing McLame under any circumstances.

If it is McCrazy vs. Hillary, all will be forgotten and forgiven with the party-first types (sorry if the kool-aid refernce offends you), who are out in force today, with Rush leading the way.

I guarantee Rush will endorse McCain if he faces off against the Beast in '08. And those who threaten to go Third Party or not to vote for the Manchurian Candidate against the Beast will be subject to the same insults that are being casually (and counterproductively) tossed out here today

That looks great. I think I'm going to make some french toast and ham for breakfast. Thanks for the inspiration.

Chickenhawk-ism Hasn't been illegal for a long time. Hear any of the politicians beating their breasts, tearing their hair, rending their garments, suggesting that it should be?

The same people hurling insults and invective at conservatives today (including Rush) will be the first ones cheerleading for McCrazy if he is shoved down our throats in the '08 primaries.

Why don't you go back in the archives and tell me when Rush gave McCain an ounce of credibility when he was trying to get the nomination in 2000. I will bet you can't find anything.

Next time you see that idiot with the car signs, ask him if he realizes that there are more abortions in a few weeks then have died in Iraq and Afghanistan combined the past five years. People like that are beyond reason or logic.

than a conservative leaning democrat. ......

Can't think of a single Dem. in a race that is conservative leaning. In fact, those are few and far between. The dems that win go into the democrat hip pocket, with Pelosi and Rangel and Murtha in leadership roles. Do you honestly believe that is better than what we have now?

If we don't win I believe the Dims are going to subpoena, and subpoena more with the old adage "its not the nature of the evidence...its the seriousness of the charge." And, they're going to try their hardest to impeach Bush. IMHO, they view it as payback time.

Don't you remember the wooptie-doo when the Dow hit 11,000 or whatever when Pretty Boy Billy was in power. My God, you'd have thought we all hit the lottery.
Right now WABC news is celebrating the number of our boys that have been killed this month. Like they give a good goddam.

And the drug crack about Rush was lame.

It certainly was. In fact, lame is too nice a word.

Funny thing about FR.

You can be called a kool-aid drinker on one thread for supporting a conservative candidate over an "electable" candidate during the primary.

Then called a kool-aid drinker for supporting the electable candidate rather than staying at home to "send a message" on a different thread.

I believe he was one of the few Republicans who ran on term limits and kept his promise to prove his dedication to term limits by only serving one term.

I love the guys who said, "I'm for term limits, and I will stay in office until we can get it passed!"
