NEW YORK -- Civil rights lawyer Lynne Stewart was sentenced to 28 months in prison in federal court in Manhattan Monday. She was convicted of providing support to terrorists by helping a jailed Egyptian sheik communicate with his followers on the outside.
Before sentencing, her lawyer told the judge that any prison sentence for Stewart would be a death sentence because of her serious health problems.
Stewart pleaded with the judge to allow her to live out the rest of her life "productively, lovingly, righteously.''
Assistant US Attorney Andrew Dember rejected defense suggestions that Stewart's conduct was judged differently after
9-11.
"This case had nothing to do with September 11,'' Dember told the judge. "What she was doing was smuggling terrorism messages and smuggling out Abdel-Rahman's responses.''
When Stewart arrived at the courthouse this morning, about 150 supporters chanted "Free Lynne, Free Lynne.''
Federal prosecutors say she had released a statement by Omar Abdel-Rahman, a blind sheik sentenced to life in prison after he was convicted in plots to blow up five New York landmarks and assassinate Egypt's president.

I wonder if the female side of the prison has the same type of "code" as the male side?
I can't believe she said "I am not a traitor!" What does she call it, aiding and abeting? That's illegal, too!
Evil can usually make itself beautiful in order to corrupt and control others. This time, however, it decided to appear exactly the way it really is. No better than the Rosenburgs, and just as guilty. She should be grateful that the standards for 'ol Sparky are set so high.
I doubt she's ever done anything productive in her life.
Hope she enjoys prison. We should send her to Iran when her time is served.
That is really a slap on the wrist. The only thing I would say (haven't followed the case in depth) was that pretty much most of what she had done in acting as attorney and passing on info to his al Qaeda cronies was before 9-11 and before the Patriot Act was passed. So she should be judged according to the laws that were on the books at that time (were they that lenient???)
That's cruel and unusual punishment...to the other prisoners!
The fat, filthy, whore-pig has more facial hair than Moses!
Now-now, let's not make fun of her looks. She'd be better-looking but she's too busy doing thoughtful and noble work. She is, of course, one of the enlightened ones. Not to mention she is most likely more integratively-complex than you evil right-winged kooks. She is more sophisticated. She is more intelligent. She is nuanced and compassionate. All the things to PNAC sycophants are not.
She looks like half the women here in SF. What an animal.
You web-savvy guys are AMAZING!!! How long to post pics of Felix Ungar's wife from the Odd Couple? Yum!
Yes, a Clintonista judge gives a love-pat to a treasonous commie swine of a "lawyer"..... shows just how squishy soft the Demagogues truly are on terrorism, treason, and crime in general. She should have gotten the maximum possible sentence under the law. Prosecutors were recommending 30 years..... Clinonista judge says "28 MONTHS WITH TIME OFF FOR TREASONOUS BEHAVIOR".... she'll be out before the end of 2007, I'd guess.
All she had to do is hide in Sandy Berger's pants while she did it and she could have gotten off with ZERO jail time.
I think you're right about fed sentences.
She was convicted of providing support to terrorists by helping a jailed Egyptian sheik communicate with his followers on the outside.
She deserves life in jail. She is a threat to our country. How do we know she won't provide aid to terrorists again? This is just BS.
Gloria is Felix's ex-wife, whom he spends almost the whole series pining over. Gloria divorced him on the grounds of pestiness, and even though it's clear that she still has feelings for him, she can't stand living with him. He was always insanely jealous, and unwittingly made her feel inadequate, by re-cooking her meals, and telling her how to set the table and do the laundry. Depending on which episode you're watching, Gloria's maiden name is either Fleener or Schaefer.
Semper Fi
I hope the fat traitrous bitch dies in prison. But she wont. The benches of our nation's courts are filled with traitors.
