Community invited to Ramadan event (Geneva NY)

GENEVA - People of all faiths are invited to celebrate the Muslim holy month of Ramadan with a night of dinner, devotion and dialogue, hosted by Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

On Thursday, the Colleges will host an interfaith meal and discussion. Organizers hope the evening will inspire more events to promote inter-religious understanding. Attendees are encouraged to fast during the day and donate their lunch money to tsunami relief efforts.

The food will be potluck, and Imam Yahya Luqman, of Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Rochester, will speak about keeping the faith in America. Luqman will speak at 5 p.m. in Coxe Hall, Room 8. Dinner will begin around 6:20 p.m. on the second floor of the International Affairs House.

"The idea is to invite different religious communities together to talk and have a dialogue," said Etin Anwar, a first-year professor of Islamic Studies at the Colleges. "Maybe this will be a start."

Ramadan, one of the most sacred times in Islam, is a month-long celebration that commemorates the period when Mohammed is said to have received the revelations that form the basis of the Koran. Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar.

During Ramadan, Muslims who've reached puberty are prohibited from eating, drinking, smoking and having sex during the daylight hours. There are some exceptions, such as for pregnant or menstruating women, the sick and anyone who is traveling. Gossiping and back-biting are also forbidden.

Anwar said that many Muslims recite the holy book once or more during the month, a difficult feat considering it contains more than 6,000 verses.

The essence of Ramadan, she said, is the fast.

"Ramadan is a month of forgiveness, it is also a month of purification," Anwar said. "We purify ourselves by fasting."

Fasting, or sawm, is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and considered essential to living a good life. It fits in with the Islamic concept of greater jihad, or the struggle within oneself to submit to God.

Muslims who use Ramadan as an excuse for violence are gravely mistaken, Anwar said.

"We're not even supposed to talk bad about other people and religions [during Ramadan]," she said. "It's the complete opposite of the spirit of the month."

Ramadan is also a time for togetherness in the Muslim community, with family and friends gathering over morning and evening meals, she said. In larger Muslim communities, people come together for taraweh, or communal prayer.

In addition to fasting, Anwar said many Muslims volunteer and give to charity. Much of this continues even after the month ends.

"We want to carry over the blessings of this Ramadan to the next one," she said.

The food will be potluck

Maybe they should warn people not to bring porkchops...

Okay, but then, maybe, instead of trying to tell the rest of us how its a "religion of peace," this professor should be trying to get the "radical fringe" (of which there are several million-some "fringe") to behave.

If this party is as good as the Christmas and Easter get-togthers which are hosted by Hobart and William Smith Colleges, then it will be a night to remember.

Sooo, women that fit the above categories can eat, have sex, drink and smoke. Or if you have a cough or are traveling, such as driving to the Mosque?

Do you have to smoke, drink etc while traveling? This brings up so many questions.

I'm sure Hillary will show up for this. Hope she's gotten the purple off her feet from "stomping" in grape country.

In NYC, I believe she actually wore a veil to an affair. It was about the same time that Condit went into hiding.

Pure fantasy.

Lets have the local Jewish community invite Muslims over for Hannakuh dinners and see how many show up. The answer will be ZERO. This isn't about 'interfaith dialogue', which is an empty PC term invented by pacifists. Its about converting people to Islam.

As for Ramadan... lets be real about this. Muslims routinely threaten 'Ramadan jihad' and 'Ramadan offensives'. Muslims have CLEARLY shown that:

Ramadan = Murder Month

Nothing mentioned about murdering innocents or beheading infidels being forbidden during the "holy" month of Ramadam.

Sorry, I will not be able to attend Ramaden Event, as I am afraid I might Heckle the speaker, and start singing, "I am glad to be an American, where at least I know I am free", while flashing a picture of the Mohammed Cartoon.

If they are fasting during Ramaden, you can even take a bucket of Kentucky Fried, with Biscuits.

The moose-limbs are a lot like another foreign group with that chauvinistic attitude: "What's ours is ours; what's yours is negotiable."
La Raza: for the race everything, for everyone else, nothing.
Save me a seat. I'll bring a big bag of pork rinds.
