Across the country, Republicans are taking a beating: President Bush is at historic lows in public opinion polls, the war in Iraq has lost favor with voters, and the party is dealing with the latest in a series of ethics scandals that have Republicans staring at the prospects of losing control of Congress.
Yet, oddly enough, in California it may be Democrats who have the most reason to fear Election Day. Not only does their gubernatorial candidate, Phil Angelides, trail Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger heavily in the polls, but there is growing concern that if Angelides does not inspire Democrats to vote, low party turnout could seal the fate of other vulnerable Democrats and even left-leaning ballot propositions.
Recent polls have shown Republicans have a shot at winning a number of "down-ballot" races, including secretary of state, insurance commissionerand even lieutenant governor, where each candidate has put himself in position to take advantage of any Schwarzenegger coattail effect.
Nonetheless, Democrats remain confident that the national tide will rescue Angelides and other statewide candidates. Democrats would not necessarily come out to vote for Angelides, but against Republicans. And, they hope, disillusioned Republicans may stay home.
A survey last month by the Public Policy Institute of California taken before the Congressional page scandal showed that 44 percent of Republicans lack enthusiasm about voting, compared with 38 percent of Democrats.

Nice duck.

OK, so it was "only" 10 points -- the same principle still applies. AND Bush approval IS very low in CA.
WHy do you think the Dems still keep trying to connect Arnold to Bush? Precisely because Bush' approval is low in CA and they try to get his unpopularity to rub off on Arnold.

Yes, it can hardly be stressed enough... go out and VOTE a straight Republican ticket.
We need a good BENCH in California so we'll have viable candidates when Schwarzengger, Boxer and DiFi retire.
Bingo!
This is the line from Al Rantel's show the other day, where by he concluded that Schwarzenegger's remark means "I do not want to be associated with GWB"
Actually it is a statement of great respect for our President's position. Think about it!!!
Arnold's movies, although made mega bucks at the Box Office, were never material for an Oscar...period.
Me thinks the Governator meant that, he can not be on par with GWB (the Oscar). It will take some major accomplishments as a Governor to walk in GWB's shoes!
Arnold is NOT A DEMOCRAT. Your statement is totally ridiculous, and it just shows you keep trying to suppress the conservative vote, helping the Dems.
Arnold did as many conservative things, as anyone could have done in CA, everything from refusing the raise taxes, despite of Dem pressure, to making CA more business friendly by pushing through the workers comp reform, and vetoing several business killer bill, vetoing the disastrous universal healthcare bill and vetoing homosexual marriage and a couple of key pro-homosexual bill, such as teaching kids in school about their accomplishments. Not to mention that he also put the conservative reform propositions on the ballot in 2005, that the voters defeated.
The Dems stand is the opposite of Arnold's in all of the above.
It's not just California where this is happening (don't forget that Doolittle and Pombo might benefit from and Arnold landslide, too)
But in Florida, the Dems are also looking at some hefty losses if Crist wins the day by the landslide he's expected to do so with. There's lots of marginal House races in Florida and it could hurt the Dems bad. Then there's Connecticut where Governor Rell is leading by staggering margins and where Lamont is dragging along in his weird campaign - could all this help Johnson, Shays and Simmons? Time would fail to talk about what a potential Perdue landslide could do to the vulnerable Dems in Georgia or how the weakness of the Dems in statewide races in Nevada could hurt them, too.
This election is full of little surprises. Believe me.
Comparing Bush to an Oscar was a COMPLIMENT!
Anyone who actually watched could see it was NOT a bash.
It was the perfect thing to say.
I totally agree.
By quoting him exactly.
Arnold's groupies don't care about other Republicans.
If you look at the 2004 presidential election and compare it to the 2004 voter registration in the most simplistic of terms*, it would say that Independents voted 54/46 for Kerry/Bush. That ratio (1.17 to 1) is slightly less than the ratio of registered dems to reps (1.23 to 1).
*i.e. assume all dems voted for Kerry, all reps for Bush, and all other candidates getting their votes from the "other" parties (P&F, Green, etc).
Arnold delivered those remarks on Leno together with criticism of the Presidents foreign policy and the purported need for Bush "...to find an exit strategy as quickly as possible."
Did you watch the Leno show?
His apologists know it too.
