Mexican bears begin to reappear in Big Bend

The bears are back at Big Bend National Park. After years of decline because of drought, a recent increase in Mexican bear sightings has forced park officials to temporarily close a popular hiking trail.
The Oak Spring Trail and access to the Lower Cattail Canyon at the base of the Chisos Mountains were closed Oct. 5 after two mama bears, their four cubs and a male bear were seen in the leafy canyon, feeding on acorns.
The area, which leads to a small waterfall, will be closed until at least Nov. 1, said Raymond Skiles, the park's wildlife biologist. It's the first trail closure for the park in 10 years.
More than $1 million has been spent there in the past 15 years to keep humans and bears at a healthy distance. Bear-proof trash cans are in place and educational materials have been distributed to visitors.
But when bears are feeding in large numbers, it's time to move people away from them. "We just want to give them a chance to feed in peace," Skiles said.
The bear population had been wiped out by hunting and trapping when the park opened in 1944. It took 40 years before bears began reappearing, making their way from the Sierra del Carmen range, just across the Rio Grande.
As many as 30 were counted in the park by the 1990s, but years of drought killed off most food sources by 2000.
Only 53 bear sightings were reported in 2003, but the total rose to 128 last year.
Yeah, but then they will figure out how to saddle them.
Note the many recent stories about wildlife crossing the border...NY Times had a recent front page story on jaguars crossing into SE Arizona from Mexico.
These stories are setting the stage for environmental objections to building the border wall.
oh, great.
Stealing the pic'a'nic baskets American bears won't.
It didnt take them long did it?
LOL!!!
Are they a subspecies of black bears? Brown or grizzly bears? Or are they a separate species? I had never heard of them.
Uh, the southernside campgrounds are closed. But not because of bears. Because of crime. A National Park. I cannot camp near the border because of crime by Mexican Nationals. In a NATIONAL Park. I believe the bears are prolly committing some sort of crime too. We need some bear spotting blimps and radars.
"Hurry up with that fence, will ya?" [said with a smirk]
Cuidado! Aqui vienen los osos!
You are exactly right, that is the reason they have been brought up now. I have been talking with a few people about this for weeks, the left will pull out its favorite excuse for anything man made and these stories are just to set the stage.
Same here. Brown bear? Black bear?
They are only doing the work that American Bears won't do.....
lol!

The only Bear with the name "Mexican" is a Grizzly. Ursus arctos nelsoni.
Good point. It is amazing that we tolerate a situation where our own national parks aren't safe enough for our citizens to enjoy because of illegal aliens. Our National Park System is a treasure and its a shame that people in those areas are having to limit their access to it.
Si!
