Hospital: former Rep. Studds dies at 69

BOSTON - Former U.S. Rep. Gerry Studds, the first openly gay person elected to Congress, died early Saturday at Boston Medical Center, a hospital official said. He was 69.

Christian Kiriakos, central administrator at the hospital, said Studds died between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. He did not have additional information, and details of Studds' death could not be immediately confirmed.

Studds, a liberal Democrat who spent more than 20 years in Congress, was censured by the House in the 1980s for having sex with a 17-year-old male page. He was re-elected for several more terms.

Last year he married his longtime partner, Dean Hara, in Boston.

In 2002 a 65-year-old male white could expect to live, on average, 18 more years. Gays, however, could expect, on average, ZERO to 8 more years. Studds lived only for only half of the expectation, falling in the middle of the expected range for gay white men.

I guess he was the mean of the expectation.

This is eerie. I do not remember much being made of this at the time. Funny how the memory goes.... A 17 year old page? And he actually had sex with him? And then didn't resign? I'm finding this all hard to believe.

He was censored in the 80s for sex that happened in the 70s. I guess they figured if it's been over a decade, you can stay??????

"can't wait to see and hear the eulogizing about this guy."

Will you take a stand for the poor?

Do it for Gary.

Will you take a stand social justice?

Do it for Gary.

Will you embrace gays, lesbians, and the trans-gendered?

Do it for Gary, cause he can't do it anymore.

No media will be allowed at the funeral. You can depend on that. The Democrats will minimize the public attention and prevent them being seen celebrating this pervert's life.

Not only did he not resign, during the censure vote he turned his back on the Congress. He also received 3 standing ovations from his "colleagues" on the Democratic side of the isle. Boy wouldn't a video of this be delicious for a few late minute commercials around the country by the RNC.......

Rock Hudson was a "real" gay man, I think this poor guy just couldn't attract a living female.

I'd also bet ole Gerry STUDDS lived up to his last name.

LOL!

You've got to wonder--- was "STUDDS" a stage name used to advertise his 'prowess'?

One thing I'll never forget from those days was driving into work in Boston and someone had hung a banner off a highway overpass. It read...STUDDS LOVES KIDS.

...AFTER getting the 17-year old page drunk AND for making unwanted sexual advances two TWO other underage male pages after getting them drunk, too.

The media should tell the FULL Studds story without whitewashing it. It wasn't even "just about sex".

Does that mean that the 'widow' can continue to receive his Congressional pension checks?

A Dr tells his patient, "I've got bad news and really bad news".
Patient says, "Give me the really bad news".
Doc says, "you've got AIDS"!
Patient replies, "AIDS? AIDS? OH MY GOD WHAT WILL EVERYONE THINK? I'M GOING TO DIE, MYYYY GODDDD!....What's the bad news?"
Doc says, "You've also got Alzheimer's!"
Patient says,"Alzheimer's? Whew, for a minute there I thought you were going to tell me I've got AIDS".
