Residents in Western Maryland and on the Eastern Shore say there are many whites among them who will not vote for a black candidate, such as Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele, who is running for the U.S. Senate.
"Here in rural parts of the state, race might be an issue. It shouldn't, but it might," Greg Slick, a physical education teacher at North Hagerstown High School, said at a recent Friday night varsity football game. "They are not openly going to say it."
Mr. Slick, 52, a registered Republican who is white, said he will vote for Mr. Steele. But he added that the World Knights of the Ku Klux Klan is not based in nearby Sharpsburg by accident, despite public outcry every summer over the group's annual rally at Antietam National Battlefield.
"Someone is drawing them here," he said.
David Marshall, 54, a white waterman from Crisfield on the Eastern Shore, said he is sure some of the people he works with will vote against Mr. Steele because of his skin color.
However, he said he and his friends will vote for Mr. Steele, regardless of his race.

along with the "Steele Plan for Change" document which outlines Michael Steele's plan to shake up business-as-usual in Washington to get something done for Maryland - on important issues like education, economic growth, health care, the environment and more.
(I cant keep the link live but the Steele website has his new commercial.) I think he is appearing in Cumberland tomorrow.
Thanks for the ping. I agree with you. Erhlich isn't perfect, and neither is Steele, but they both have my vote.
I also agree with the earlier post that said there probably isn't a much racial prejudice in rural Maryland as the writer of this article thinks there is.
sitetest, correct me if I am mistaken but I thought Ehrlich got high-50s in percent of the white vote in 2002. Steele is only a few points off then, and he has picked up some of the black vote over Ehrlich.
I suspect that even the dog they use in the ad has a sarcastic purpose, too.
After all the "Oreo" cracks tossed at Steele by the "tolerant, non-racist liberals", do you think it coincidence that they chose the one breed of dog that looks most like an Oreo?
Boston terriers are black on both sides with white in the middle.
They may or may not have done it on purpose but I hope they did, just to throw the "tolerance" of Dems back in their hypocritical faces.
"Thus, my county, Anne Arundel, is extremely anti-development, and we see little new housing being developed. Ditto in Montgomery."
There is practically no land in Montgomery county left to build new housing.
Dear Norman Bates,
If I recall correctly, Mr. Ehrlich got nearly 2/3 of the white vote.
He got something like 22% of the black vote, held his own with other non-white voters, and about 65% or so of the white vote.
If Mr. Steele eventually does get close to that percentage of the white vote, he'll almost certainly win. However, if he gets even 5% less, he'll need better than 1/3 of the black vote to win. No poll has put him at more than 33% of the black vote, and at least one has put him at something more like 25%.

Dear ko_kyi,
Not so.
Large parts of the county's land are off-limits to development for "environmental" reasons.

I've got to believe that 'class will out': Steele is handsome, articulate and has a self-mocking sense of humor. That's gonna be a mighty hard act to beat.
Or that Maryland is Liberal and full of 'necks. . . It's all so confusing to me. . .
There are a few such racists around, but I doubt if there are enough to be a problem.
It's Maryland. Stupidity is in the water. Forget politics -- I can prove it by Maryland drivers.
...I would not consider Maryland to be a southern state...
**
Hey, our state song, "Maryland, My Maryland" talks about "Northern scum". We really ar south of the Mason-Dixon line, but I don't know any Marylanders --including my family -- who consider themselves Southernors. I don't know why this is so.
No, I was being sarcastic. (I know it can be hard to tell on the internet.) I am a Texan, so I am somewhat sensitive to the idea that the South is home to all the world's racists.
Thanks. I believe that I've seen the latest stuff at the Steele site, but I will continue to revisit and resend the links to my out of state cousins - that I may pump them for every nickle they are worth.
It would be interesting to note if there is an equivocating piece; claiming that venomous left wingers will be supressed by Ben Cardin's lack of hate-filled invective? Let's face it, he's no Senator Babs!
I heard an interesting call on Drudge tonight. He was requesting first-tme voters to call in, and one 18 year old from Baltimore called. Sounded terrific, voting for "our Republican governor" and said that Steele was a great candidate. Said that there was little enthusiasm among his acquaintances for O'Malley. Had nothing to say about Cardin that I remember. (What is there to say!?)
Yeah, I heard this young man, as well. He did sound good. I don't believe he mentioned Cardin either.
"Had nothing to say about Cardin that I remember. (What is there to say!?)"
A light-weight, flavorless lib who will raise YOUR taxes that he might redistribute YOUR money to people that he feels are more deserving of it. (I could go on.)
Oh my God!
You must NEVER publicly mention the lyrics of our state song or the liberals will finally read it the whole way through and change it to something more politically correct!....;D
