Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who played a key role in ending the Cold War, said the United States had squandered an opportunity to improve global politics after the Cold War, a paper said on Friday.
In comments that were among the harshest he has made about the United States, Gorbachev compared U.S. foreign policy to one of the deadliest diseases on the planet AIDS.
"Today our American friends are suffering from an illness worse than AIDS. And I would say this is the victor's complex," Gorbachev was quoted as saying in an interview with the Netzzeitung.
Unable to extricate itself from its Cold War mentality, the United States was playing a dwindling role in world politics, while Russia, China, Brazil, Europe, India and Japan were becoming stronger, Gorbachev said.

Give up, Gorby, you're a pathetic has-been.
The only thing that can be said for Gorby is that when push came to shove in the 1980s he was able to realize that the Soviet economy, indeed its entire system, was a hopeless basket case. That, and he declined to follow the example of his illustrious (sic) predecessors by killing everyone in Eastern Europe, etc. who started to speak out........ otherwise, Gorby is a fool and a slug.

They did not 'choose' to change. They were bankrupt and had no choice but to change. Big difference. He's still a commie, and he still toes the commie line. What can you expect?
But the German far left will wave this as another battle cry.

Yeah, they should write "...Gorbachev, who chose surrender and collapse over civil war, surrender, and collapse....."
Bright guy, at least he could read the writing on the wall....

Gorbachev is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. His first act upon becoming General Secretary was to try and restrict alcohol consumption. Yes, in Russia.
His AIDS analogy is particularly pathetic as this site says:
Russia has the largest HIV epidemic in Europe, and accounts for around two-thirds of the cases in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region. There were an estimated 940,000 people living with HIV at the end of 2005 in Russia - up from 760,000 in 2003 - and this figure looks set to increase even further.
Regards, Ivan

I can't imagine what all the excitement is about. Gorby made this statement months ago. I guess this news has finally reached the stage of ripeness where ABC considers it fit for pre-election consumption.

Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who played a key role in ending the Cold WarOnly in Liberal's wildest fantasies would that be true. Reagan is responsible for ending the Cold War, particularly with his "Tear Down This Wall" speech.

The transformation of Russia under Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Primakov, and Putin has been a colossal deception. Gorbachev is a fake and a Communist. So is Putin.

What is it with liberals always listening to THE LOSERS and giving LOSERS so much gravitas?!!
Um, if they were so bright, they wouldn't be LOSERS!
I think a lot of libs spent a lot of time getting wedgies in the gym locker.

Much to the contrary.
America has seized the chance to change the world.
Yeah, its tough, its challenging, it costs blood and money and takes resolve. But it has to be done now or a far worse fate awaits the world.

9-11 forced the US to reevaluate it's position in the world. We fought and won the Cold War, but new sources of evil came forth. Thanks to Clinton and the Lib's way of dealing with the world, which Gorby has obviously taken to, We must start over from stage one.
