WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Aggressive enforcement of U.S. immigration laws is hurting farmers in New York state, who stand to lose $195 million over the next 2 years unless Congress creates "reasonable and effective farm worker programs," agricultural lenders said on Wednesday."...............
............"In some cases, farmers have been unable to harvest or market crops as a result of these disruptions," the lenders said in a statement supporting immigration-law reform.
.........."If this continues, we conservatively estimate that New York state will lose in excess of 900 farms, $195 million in value of agricultural production and over 200,000 acres in production in agriculture over the next 24 months."
................"Dairy and other farms would account for the largest losses, 522 farms and $144 million in output, they said. Once out of production, the lenders said, the 200,000 acres of land was not likely to return to farm use."
..........."Up to 70 percent of U.S. farm workers, or some 500,000 people, are undocumented, by most estimates."

BE PREPARED:
"When Congress returns from its recess, it is critical ... that comprehensive immigration reform with appropriate farm worker provisions be adopted," the lenders said. They called for "reasonable and effective" farm worker programs."

"Although they broke the law by illegally crossing our borders ... our city's economy would be a shell of itself had they not, and it would collapse if they were deported," he said. "The same holds true for the nation." Bloomberg

That's a link to GWB's speech yesterday on how well the economy is doing. Not a single mention of credit to the illegal lien workforce, who's work seems to be propping up the economy. No mention of them, yet without them, it would collapse.
I haven't noticed any shortages in the local supermarkets. But then again, much of our produce here in Arizona comes from Mexico!
If I click on one more article and see that stupid "monkeying around" picture up in the corner again....GRRRRR.
Ok..I tried again to actually read the article but then there was a "Green Giant" vegetables ad in the middle of it that made it even funnier.
"If I click on one more article and see that stupid "monkeying around" picture up in the corner again....GRRRRR."
LOL!! I wonder how many of us are thinking the same thing. I tried to ignore the dang thing for as long as I could and then it was ticking me off so I took a good look at it trying to figure out what it was, it is beyond annoying.
I can't do it..I can't finish an article without laughing where the text states: "If this continues, we conservatively estimate that New York state will LOSE in excess of 900 farms" and the ad across from it states: "Your whole family WINS when you SERVE Green Giant".
Utilize chain gangs, if the NYS ACLU dosen't object too much.
Drug raids are crimping my ability to pay my mortgage, because I can't go out and make big bucks selling heroin on the street corner.
Speed limits are crimping my ability to get to work on time because I can't drive 100 mph on the Parkway.
The idiot skateboarding kid across the street's right to life is crimping my sleeping time because I'm not permitted to go out and hack his head off when he makes all that racket at 11:30 at night.
My hobby of bedding young starlets is crimped by the fact that my wife would have me dead on the floor and the fact that young starlets will not give me the time of day.
My life is crimped in many ways.
They'd have to pass a background check here and in their home country in order to stay. STAY? WTF? And just how much more would this cost the taxpayers to process about 12 million of these background checks? The only place they should stay is in jail while they await transportation out of this country!
They'd be treated sort of like sex offenders in that they must keep us informed when they move. Oh yeah! That's the key...the honor system. If you believe that they will keep the authorities informed, please provide me with your address so I can come over to sell you some land in Florida.
Not informing us when they move would be a criminal offense. Wow! That hit the nail on the head. I'll bet the last thing they ever want to do is to break the law. Let's see, they come over here illegally and break the law, but failure to inform us of their moving would be a more serious infraction of the law? I'll bet that will whip them right into line immediately upon passage of a bill containing your wonderful suggestions.
Pay a fine $1000/yr up to $10,000 max. $500 due at the time of registration to help cover the costs of the processing. They'd have 1 year max to pay the fine. And just where will this money come from? Their welfare checks? After all, if they become pseudo citizens under this wonderful plan, would not they legally qualify for welfare and all of the wonderful benefits that come with it?
Sent back home to re-enter legally? Probably too disruptive. No, you missed the point...we don't want them to come back PERIOD! They have no respect for law and will have no respect for law if they are allowed to come back. They had their chance and they muffed it.
Not registered after the 60 day period, no mercy. Strike One: sent home. Strike Two: five years imprisonment, then sent home. Strike Three: life imprisonment. How is one to deal with such intellect? Should we give them a "time-out" for not registering first? Should we give them more than three chances? Once again, how much more will coddling these criminals cost the taxpayers?
If convicted of a crime, do the time then sent home plus moved to Strike Two status. Wow! That rule ought to put the fear of God into them. BTW, don't you think that they have already committed a crime by coming here illegally?
In summary, this kind of thinking is the root cause of the problems we have today. First, the idea that they are going to play by the rules and second, that no thought is given to the tremendous costs that are above, and beyond, their current financial burden to our society, that it would take to even implement such a plan as you describe.
They're illegal, they're criminals, they have no intention in assimilating into our society, they have no allegiance to our country and place a huge burden on all genuine American law abiding, tax paying, citizens. GET THEM OUT OF THE COUNTRY...PERIOD!
It's disgusting that we have to import farm workers from other countries to do this stuff when we have millions of unemployed people of our own.
So why is it that the government doesn't detain the illegals and make them work for free on the farms for 45 days or so and them deport them?
Spin, Spin, Spin! If there's a shortage of workers, let the prisoners do it. That's the way it was in the ol' days before the *Do-Gooders* got involved.
It's not jobs Americans won't do. It's jobs Americans won't do at the same rate of pay as illegal aliens. The poultry processors found this out recently, and other industries will also have to bump wages to attract workers which is the classic model for supply and demand. 12 to 20 million illegals are screwing American workers out of wage increases and the government can give not a rat's ass concerning this nonsense.
Sorry I don't buy into it. What did the farmers do before we had the masses of illegals flowing in? And where are the machines that are used on farms in many cases? The NY farmers don't have any? Why not employ some of the dropoups to work. Or use the ideas lulu in post 11 and Fairview in post 13 had. I come from a family who farmed and were miners in Pa and somehow they manged without Mexicans. If the Mexicans want to work here they need to be illegal and we need to make sure they aren't carrying diseases. Nobody needs to get sick from e coli or anything else because of undocumented workers picking apples etc or working on dairy farms. Most dairy farms have milking machines so I don't understand why they need them. The Amish seem to run their dairy farms well without Mexican help. Go figure.
correction for my post 17 the mexicans need to be legal. ( i am still waking up and on my 1st cup of coffee)
All that needs be done is get legally visa's MIGRANT FARM WORKERS off roofs, out of kitchens, off golf courses, away from construction sites, off meat packing plants, and back on the FARMS where their work was intended to be performed.
Instead, they're everywhere BUT where they were legally admitted for work.
Well, I agree, we don't really HAVE to import them.
American workers should be doing the work. But paying them a decent wage would affect the economy that Bush keeps bragging is so good (but is riding on and dependent upon paying a slave wage.)IMO, that is why no president from either party is ever REALLY willing to address the issue.
