PLANS previously drafted by the Pentagon predict 52,000 US military casualties and one million civilian dead in the first 90 days of conflict if America attacked Pyongyang. The US leadership is looking at international economic and diplomatic sanctions against North Korea as its primary response to Monday's nuclear test.

The ultimate concern is the lives and property of the South Koreans. Our troops could get through the barrage, but may only be capable of a limited response considering all of the civilians South of the zone.
While our troops could get through a lot of the ensuing bombardment and respond, there's nothing that could make the whole of South Korea bullet and bomb proof. The entire South side up through Seoul would be a series of large craters. Perhaps then their youth would begin to understand why we are there to begin with? Wouldn't matter. Once both sides are devastated, China sweeps in and makes them both a poor Eastern province.
THE WORLD'S TEN LARGEST ARMIES

2. India - 1,200,000
3. North Korea - 900,000
4. South Korea - 560,000
5. Pakistan - 520,000
6. United States - 475,000
7. Iraq - 360,000 - Pre-2003, of course.
8. Myanmar - 325,000

Kim Jong Il would disappear overnight and China would finally be put in its place.
BUMP
Where are the tactical nuclear devices when you need them ?
If this dog fed, pot bellied, porn watching pervert of a dictator can be taken out early on during a decapitation strike it would take some pressure off our military.
With the abilities we have now (mini-guns, JDAMS etc), that number is just a rounding error.
Sounds like bok bok bok, some chicken is laying an egg somewhere. There would be no response if we didn't keep announcing our every move months ahead of time.
All it would take is five unannounced mins over Iran and N. Korea and the world would be a safer place.
This estimate excludes the additional 200,000 allied troops killed by warbirds from the Klingon Empire...
I think you're right. China certainly is going to be the King od the East one way or another.
Don't you love that "eye in the sky"? I would suggest any movement to tunnels has already been made but I would also suggest we know it.:o)
The NK would get a flurry of smart bombs down their throats 24 /7.
If you think about it, lil Kimmie doesn't plan to nuke anyone.
It is just a bargaining tool. Just like the rocket launches.
How much UN funds will NK get if they show they have rockets that can carry Nukes to the US?
How much for setting off some CLASS "B" nukes ?
Lil Kim needs money, he doesn't want to spend it on a war.
Um, Bush doctrine allows for pre-emptive strike. No more giving the other guy the first punch.
yes, your points are all correct. The problem is that in order to deal with the problem NOW is such a huge price in blood (particularly for ROK) that is simply won't be done by republican governments until there is extraordinary provocation, i.e. it is too late. I seriously question if ROK would even let us resume hostilities (real hostilities, not word games some bring up here) pre-emptively from their territory given what they can expect. I think the only strategy the west and japan/ROK can follow now is destabilization with what limited means exist.
Certain a bad situation overall.
Yep, you're sure a great crusader!!
It worked with the old Soviet Union. No invasion necessary.
"Within 5 hours the NOrth Koreans would send 1 million men across the demilitarized zone and overwhelm our forces as well as kill a million in Seoul."
Please.
Within 5 hours, if the NK's let 1,000,000 men into South Korea, they'd be stopping at the drive through of the first restaurant they picked up in their sights and make up for all the tree bark they've been eating for the last 20 years.
They don't have either the beans or bullets to sustain that kind of an offensive in the field for that long.
Also, you are talking a conscripted force, so you can count on defections on a battalion scale within the first 12 hours of allied bombing.
What I DO believe they'd do is launch a rocket attack.
because shiitting out yer intestines is a bad way to go out.
About 500 per day. A heck of a lot of Americans. 52000 is more than Americans who died in the 1sr Korean War. I heard Newt today, who said NK has never NOT exported their weapons. They will have plenty of takers for nuke mat'ls. Maybe Clinton should have gone to war in 94...
I distinctly remember talk of 40,000 body bags. Remember it very well, it must have been the number out in the media.
