Somali workers file bias suit against Gold'n Plump
Pioneer Press ^ | 10-3-06 | staff

Nine Somali immigrant employees at poultry processor Gold'n Plump Poultry Inc. alleged in a federal lawsuit that they were discriminated against because of their race and religion at the company's Cold Spring, Minn., plant. The group alleges the St. Cloud-based company would not permit them short breaks during the day to pray. The Muslim faith, the lawsuit says, requires five prayers a day at times defined by position of the sun. The lawsuit also claims that the company was more likely to force Somalis than whites to work the night shift and do the least desirable jobs in the factory. In a statement Monday, Peggy Brown, director of human resources, said Gold'n Plump respects the religious beliefs of all employees. Brown said Gold'n Plump has made accommodations since 2003 to its Muslim employees in an effort to provide them with opportunities to pray. She said the company announced further changes last week, before it became aware of the lawsuit, "that we believe provide yet more opportunity for observance of Muslim prayer."

At the risk of offending those who practice that enlightened "Religion of Peace", I'll remind them the company has a work break policy for ALL its employees.

For them to have any case that Muslims are discriminated against, they'd have to show that non-Muslim employees get multiple prayer breaks at fixed times during the day, regardless of job responsibilities. I'm sure they don't.

As for them doing night work... Perhaps that's because most of the breaks these employees "need" are during the day? So Muslims are scheduled for night shifts so that the employer can get work out of them, without having to pay them to practice their great enlightened "Religion of Peace."

If this offends them they are free to seek employment elsewhere. We don't follow Sharia law in the United States... yet.

Why don't we do a telethon to send all whiney, complaining, intolerant Muslims back to their shiite-hole of origin?

Actually, it's fixed positions of the sun, so the times change daily (slightly.) Try getting smoking breaks set up like that at your job...

Why don't they return to lovely, peaceful Somalia, where they can pray unhindered by evil American work practices. I would contribue to their one-way ticket home.

I saw an article once where it says certain of these prayers are a half an hour long.

Does anyone know how long these prayers are? If each takes say, 20 minutes, are they talking about assembly lines being interrupted 5 times a day for 20 minutes each? Seems a burden to me.

I remember reading somewhere that the prayers can be done in 10 minutes or so. Could be off. I was a bit flip in my comment - lawsuits of this type are usually total BS. Certainly ones brought in summer are, as only 2 of the 5 times come during normal work hours then and one of them is during lunch. The times themselves last from about 40 minutes to a couple of hours, so there's a lot of flexibility in when the prayers can be said. In winter, especially further north, all 5 times can be during work hours. Regardless, if a company applies a consistent policy to all employees, they have no case.

They think they can come here and get on the "lawsuit gravy train" I guess. I want all of them out of my country.

"Fixed times of day" was easier to write... and explain to those in Rio Linda. ;)

If they want to pray five times a day they should have found a job that provided that ability. I'm No lawyer but I think they will lose this case because its unreasonable.

Let's see,Prayer five times a day, bathroom breaks,Lunch Breaks,Smoke breaks. How much time would that kill out of your average work day.

And if all the prayer times happen during daylight hours then they can get a job on the night shift and pray at home on their own time. Oh... they're also complaining about having to work the night shift.
