I suppose I was thinking of the signal deconstruction/reconstruction taking place in a signal processor. In other words, the signal is extracted, noise and all, and then filtered through a digital filter. Digital filter can be via a ASIC designed specifically for the purpose, a general purpose DSP properly programmed, or totally in software if you have no latency concerns (like file transfers).

It hadn't occured to me to actually do the signal extraction in the optical filter stage. I wonder if that is indeed the authors intent. Perhaps I should actually read the paper!
