Reagan couldn't even begin to deliver on his pledge to try to get rid of DOE because not one Congressman was willing to sponsor the bill. School reform? Only in some parallel universe...Homeschool or private school, but never school by government
Sadly, they don't though. The vast majority want the government to "spoon feed" their children an education. What's really taking place though is that there is more indoctrination than education going on.
SO true. A woman I knew back in CA had 2 little ones the same age as my own. We were talking about Reiner (meathead's) Universal Preschool Initiative. She thought it was a great idea - more free child care, and all day! Kindergarten doesn't come fast enough for some parents, sadly.
Obviously the government can figure out a way to screw up anything. Actually, I am not a supporter of federal vouchers, but I would like to see each state change over, on its own. Of course, it would be very important to minimize state control of the schools, at the same time.
Admittedly, it's a difficult battle to get them implemented, and to get them implemented correctly, but the stakes are high, and it's a good fight.
this needs a bump
"Vouchers. (For all students, in all states.)"
Uhhhh. No. Vouchers are a crummy idea for a few of reasons. First, the reality is that he who pays the piper calls the tune. Second, vouchers are a nonstarter politically and thus a waste of time and effort.
You can usually tell faux conservative politicians by how quickly they jump on the voucher bandwagon. Supporting vouchers gives the appearance of supporting educational reform, but since they're unlikely to ever be instituted, faux conservatives need not worry about actually them actually changing anything.
"Isn't that a sad fact."
It's also highly ironic when you find yourself debating with nanny state "conservatives", and you consider for a moment that you happen to be the self-identified Democrat in the crowd.
I haven't read this entire article yet, but it looks like a good one. Looking forward to reading it tomorrow when I'm not so tired after a long day. Enjoy. :-)
This ping list is for the "other" articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. If you want on/off this list, please freepmail me. The main Homeschool Ping List by DaveLoneRanger handles the homeschool-specific articles.
Thanks cgk. Bookmarked for a later read and commentary. (o:
