Foley, Gay Republicans, And "The List"
CBS News - Public EYE ^ | 10.05.06 | Brian Montopoli

Posted on 10/07/2006 1:35:46 PM PDT by rface

On Tuesday night's "Evening News," Gloria Borger said this:

"One senior House Republican tells CBS that there's a lot of anger at what he describes as 'a network of gay staffers and gay members who protect each other and did the speaker a disservice.'"

The New Republic's Michael Crowley picks up on Borger's comment. He argues that "it's becoming clear that some people on Capitol Hill are promoting a storyline that involves gay Republican staffers--apparently led by [Tom Reynolds's chief of staff Kirk] Fordham--covering up for Mark Foley." Crowley suggests "maybe this is how Dennis Hastert and his compatriots are explaining themselves to the base."

He also notes David Corn's report on "The List" – a document being passed around political circles of high-level Republican congressional aides who are gay.

Corn, a liberal, says he will not publish The List, even though he has a copy. Here's his conclusion:

Let's be clear about one thing: the Mark Foley scandal is not about homosexuality. Some family value conservatives are suggesting it is. But anytime a gay Republican is outed by events, a dicey issue is raised: what about those GOPers who are gay and who serve a party that is anti-gay? Are they hypocrites, opportunists, or just confused individuals? Is it possible to support a party because you adhere to most of its tenets--even if that party refuses to recognize you as a full citizen? The men on The List might want to think hard about these questions--as they probably already have--for if I have a copy of The List, there's a good chance it will be appearing soon on a website near everyone......

That's funny, but not true. The gay neighbor cannot stand the coach!

The Coach is about 60. Never puts a shirt on outside. Runs around in short shorts.

Gay man told me that if he was going to be interested in someone it would be a 20 yo. gay man is also about 60.

Who ever said that life was dull in smalls ville?

we have no hesitation asking about their marital status, they should be honest enough to give their sexual orientation

I don't agree with that. I want to know their stands on issues - for example, do they support gay marriage? Do they want to penalize the Boy Scouts for banning gay scout leaders? Do they support NAMBLA? etc.
Marital status or sexual orientation don't give a clue.

A few years ago, the Dems were after GOPers who had extra-marital affairs - Gingrich, Hyde, Dole, etc. Now it's gay GOPers. If everyone who isn't the perfect example of a "Father Knows Best" family can't be a GOPer, the party would have about 10 members.

Why? If they support the GOP platform, what difference does it make?

it is absolutely no one's right to out someone before they out themselves. It disgusts me. It is a very personal decision that involves many factors

I completely agree with that. In fact, it is one of the things that fundamentally disgusts me about the left—their belief that they are entitled to control the intimate lives and behavior of other people. This is but one example.

I have some liberal friends who would be more horrified if their child turned out to be conservative than if the child turned out to be gay. Strangely, life for the child, by their own admission, would be easier in one case than the other. But that doesn't seem to matter.

One can be sure that if they are gay, they are working from within the "anti-gay" (agenda) Party to defeat measures against gay adoiption and gay marriage. There is a word for people like this and it isn't hypocrite.

Unfortunately for the Republicans, it was pushing the "Father Knows Best" image that has created this problem, imho

The premise of the Left and Democrats is that the GOP is "anti-gay," and therefore presents a conflict for a person who's gay AND Republican ... that's the wrong premise.

Most Republicans oppose the "gay agenda;" most don't like the behavior. But I would assume most Republicans are not uncomfortable with friends/family/associates who are gay so long as they don't shove their sexual preferences, activities, etc. in their faces. I don't want to hear what anyone does in his/her bedroom. period.

Nor would an active Republican who is gay necessarily have the "gay agenda" at the top of his/her list of priorities. as seems to be the assumption of the Left. Maybe, just maybe, gay Republcans care more about national security, taxes, and the economy over and above their own sexual preference.

I just can't see being gay and being Republican as mutually exclusive.

I think you may misunderstand what it means to be a "full-fledged" conservative. Despite what you might see from the msm, real conservatives do not want to control others.

So let me ask you this...do you know any homosexuals personally? I know some, and am related to some and I like them...even love them, very much. I do not approve of their lifestyle...but that is not mine to decide.

Personally, I think you may need to reevaluate a little bit.

Never use fallible human beings as your role model, ElPatriota, because they will ALWAYS disappoint you. Every single one. Jesus is the ONLY perfect human being. He is the only example you can place your confidence in.

No need to respond.

Isn't it possible to be gay and not be a socialist. Republican gays probably support low taxes and a strong defense.

Now that they have gone to such trouble to compile a list of those off the gay plantation, does anyone care? I don't. If they keep their sex lives in their own bedrooms they can make love to table lamps for all I care. :O)

I will still be voting on 11/7 for every Republican candidate on the ballot.

"I have a gay neighbor who confided in me that he is a closet Republican. I am not joking."

You mean a Republican who is a closet homo?

I rest my case. The way you phrased your questuion is the whole point of this excercise....there is no difference between the parties.

Perhaps you are not reading it correctly so I will reword it for you.

People can be gay and NOT feel it is their mission in life to militantly force it on the rest of us. AND, people can be gay and STAUNCHLY pro-life.

"Screw that "The List" and I am not going to run away from it"

it would have been better, imo, not to have posted it. Now it's out in the open and could be damaging to our party.

I already see one I last voted for and ain't gonna vote for him again. Hopefully there is enough time to replace him with a solid, straight paleoconservative, not another neocon in the dresses of a conservative.

One of the Zucker brothers recently "came out" as a Republican. For some, being a Republican is kept hidden. Zucker was interviewed by a local radio show host this past week & he said his parents would be hoping that no one they knew would hear the interview. For his parents, being a Democrat was sort of like part of their Jewish identity. He said people in Hollywood who vote Republican usually call themselves libertarians because of the stigma.
