Foley, Gay Republicans, And "The List"
CBS News - Public EYE ^ | 10.05.06 | Brian Montopoli

Posted on 10/07/2006 1:35:46 PM PDT by rface

On Tuesday night's "Evening News," Gloria Borger said this:

"One senior House Republican tells CBS that there's a lot of anger at what he describes as 'a network of gay staffers and gay members who protect each other and did the speaker a disservice.'"

The New Republic's Michael Crowley picks up on Borger's comment. He argues that "it's becoming clear that some people on Capitol Hill are promoting a storyline that involves gay Republican staffers--apparently led by [Tom Reynolds's chief of staff Kirk] Fordham--covering up for Mark Foley." Crowley suggests "maybe this is how Dennis Hastert and his compatriots are explaining themselves to the base."

He also notes David Corn's report on "The List" – a document being passed around political circles of high-level Republican congressional aides who are gay.

Corn, a liberal, says he will not publish The List, even though he has a copy. Here's his conclusion:

Let's be clear about one thing: the Mark Foley scandal is not about homosexuality. Some family value conservatives are suggesting it is. But anytime a gay Republican is outed by events, a dicey issue is raised: what about those GOPers who are gay and who serve a party that is anti-gay? Are they hypocrites, opportunists, or just confused individuals? Is it possible to support a party because you adhere to most of its tenets--even if that party refuses to recognize you as a full citizen? The men on The List might want to think hard about these questions--as they probably already have--for if I have a copy of The List, there's a good chance it will be appearing soon on a website near everyone......

My favorite uncle was one of the earliest people who got AIDS. Before he died he as an AIDS activist & I hated most of what he was trying to accomplish. I never stopped loving him, cuz people are more than just some of the things they do. He never once officially "came out of the closet" to his family & it was his mistrust of us in that area that hurt them most.

...The reason the people are on that list is because they are the ones who are against forcing the gay lifestyle on society. IOW, the gay people who agree with your political position about "gay rights" are the ones that this gay activist is going after...

You know what? you can think of homosexual whatever, but most of us would agree that STUPID is not one of their characteristics.... ok, so, if you are a homosexual...and don't agree with what the "radical" homosexual agenda, WHY IN HECH would you choose a job in the office of a Republican!.. does that make sense? :)... I DO believe that some, many.. I don't know, must want to live their lives in peace in some kind of harmony. Why then would you choose to put yourself in the Lion's mouth so to speak? unless you have (had) an agenda to begin with? AND... I DO UNDERSTAND why the "radical homesexual wing" would recent someone in a position to "advance" the agenda but not having the guts to anything about it. I understand that.

I believe the point of "the list" is that these are public figures who are in the "closet" rather than from any one party. The point Rogers is making (and it is logical, even if some of us don't approve) is that if we expect honesty from our public figures, and we have no hesitation asking about their marital status, they should be honest enough to give their sexual orientation... which says nothing about their fitness to do their job.

I noticed a few Democrats on that list... none of which surprised me. There's a few names I'd add, but it's not my list, and I don't speculate about other people's private lives anyway.

"maybe the list are those that are gay - but vote against gay marriage or stuff like that. I don't know."

Bingo! I read something from one of twinkies that said they were going to "out" those that didn't support their cause, they wanted to start with Republicans because they deem them most evil.

They want the evangelicals to sit this election out. So much has been said on this site and elsewhere, prior to Foley, that the GOP "deserves" to lose that they have no reason to believe that they won't succeed.

Ask any evangelical which they would rather have in office, abortion promoting and homosexual agenda driving democrats or abortion hating, marriage amendment pushing GAY republicans?

Their agenda could be to fight against stuff that is being done in their name & I don't see many Donks trying to do that! Do you? They are in the party that is working for the things they believe in.

Why isn't Hilary on this list?

I was in a supermarket back when Clinton was running for his 1st term. An old fellow was telling me that "you have to watch out for that Clinton's wife. She is a lawyer, and all women lawyers are dykes."
I started cracking up laughing. But then, he may be right.LMAO

The Republican party is not anti-gay.

And "the base" doesn't care who is, for the most part.

"My gay neighbor came over and warned me not to let my teenage granddaughters jump on the trampoline because the football coach who lives next door was ogling them while they were jumping. Called him a pervert"

LOL...And your gay neighbor knew that because he was ogling the coach when it happened.

Should no Republican woman hold office because she disagrees with NOW?

I rest my case. The way you phrased your questuion is the whole point of this excercise....there is no difference between the parties.

That's a logical extension. Should this "bathhouse putsch" succeed, you can bet the model will be carried forward to other issues near and dear to the socialist heart.

Sorry, I am not that sophisticated... I am having a hard time just dealing with this issue. And I have to admit that this issue is a lot about "gut" feeling on my part. I don't need to think about it, I know it instinctively.

Your issue, some other time maybe :)

Hmm... so Allen has two in his staff
John Reid, Allen Paul Unger, Allen

Hmmm... I don't like this

Just for curiosity sake, why don't you like this. Just because conservatives hired gays to answer phones and type a letter. I don't think it has anything to do with the candidate. They applied for the job and probably the best candidate. Could be that the Senators did not even know they were gay at first. I mean I can't imagine it is on the application.

For example Foley performed the truly unforgivable sin of voting FOR the marriage amendment.

He is voting as a representative of his constituency, not as an individual.

...Not for a mintue!... POLITICIANS... are extremely clever, smart, astute individuals who run circles around simpletons like most voters are. I am constantly amazed by how good they are. They even know when to play "stupid." :) Got to give them credit. I think Allen blew his chances for president, even before this issue came up... now it's all about his senate seat. Politics can be a bloody sport someone said.
