In his Oct. 4 op-ed, Joseph A. Califano Jr. bragged of a day "When the House Could Clean Itself" under the Democratic leadership of Speaker Tip O'Neill. The process worked, Mr. Califano claimed.
However, the result stank to high heaven, as neither of the two representatives found in 1983 to have had illicit relationships with House pages was summarily expelled. Instead, they were allowed to remain in the House, with censure their only punishment.
One of the guilty parties, Rep. Gerry Studds (D-Mass.), contemptuously turned his back on Congress when he was censured. Rep. Daniel B. Crane (R-Ill.) was thrown out by voters of his district, who had higher moral standards and more respect for the House than did the Democratic constituents of Mr. O'Neill or Mr. Studds; the unrepentant representative kept winning reelection until his retirement in 1996.
I'll take Speaker J. Dennis Hastert's stewardship of the House over Tip O'Neill's any day.

Unmentioned by Califano in his op-ed was that he only recommended a reprimand of Studds and Crane.
The House under the Republicans, even with all their own failings, is a much better place than under the Democrats. I'm old enough to remember the cesspool that the House was under Democratic Speakers Carl Albert, Tip O'Neill, Jim Wright and Tom Foley.

Good letter, Kristinn.
Well said and well done!
Thanks for everything that you do, kristinn!
Right on the money. I'm shocked -- SHOCKED -- that WaPo printed it. They usually recoil from truth the way vampires of fiction recoil from garlic-laden crucifixes.
bttt
Phillip Crane was the rep from Illinois. Daniel was from Indiana.
....under the Democratic leadership of Speaker Tip O'Neill....
Which means it is all Chris's fault.
You are right, sexual activity that the RATS had, they should have been expelled and charges brought.
I remember the cesspool of Democrats during the first years of Clinton when Republicans weren't allowed to ask questions. It was a mob rule.
Good letter, and even better that you managed to send the WaPost something they felt obliged to publish.
What was the Democratic response when Congressman Barney Frank was caught running a male brothel out of his townhouse? Granted, homosexuality is repugnant regardless of which side practices it, but the Left's outrage on this issue seems oddly selective.
Good job!
I hope Matthews reads this.
I agree about the emails. And .. since the IM's were a "PRANK" .. do we even know that any of them are legit ..?? They appear to have been a cut and paste job - which to me smells of a hatchet job on what Foley actually said to them.
And .. the 18 yr old has admitted that he and Foley did discuss sexual issues. So .. I'm betting this was more a give and take of information .. and NOT THE SOLICITATION of sex by Foley.
Foley's overly-friendly attitude to young men is totally understandable. I'm not saying I approve of his actions .. which are suspect, but no physical contact was ever made with any of the Pages .. and that tells me he's not a pedophile .. just a gay man.
They kept reelecting Barney Frank, just like they did Studds. Frank claimed he didn't know what his paramour, Stephen Gobie, was up to. Frank was disciplined for abusing his office to do some favors for Gobie.
I believe I heard Stephen Gobie on the radio, maybe Mark Levin's or Chris Plante's show, and he said that he was running a heterosexual prostitution ring out of Barney Frank's apartment. I can't remember exactly what he said but he is not gay and was not involved sexually with Frank. He said Barney Frank let him do it because Frank was interested in someone Gobie knew and he was the go-between (or pimp, whatever).
