MILITARY forces pursuing the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf bandits captured a bandit on Wednesday in the hinterland of Sulu province, an official said here Thursday.

Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) chief Maj. Gen. Eugenio Cedo identified the captured Abu Sayyaf bandit as Nadzmir Abduraji Amad, 22, of Talipao town of the said province.

Cedo said Amad was captured by patrolling troops from the Army's 2nd Scout Ranger Battalion, following information from residents about the latter's presence in Barangay Bandang, Talipao.

Talipao is said to be the turf of slain Abu Sayyaf leader Ghalib Andang alias Commander Robot, who gained international notoriety for his involvement in the Sipadan mass kidnapping in 2000.

Andang, along with other top Abu Sayyaf leaders, was killed when they allegedly attempted to escape sometime in March of 2005 from a detention center in Bicutan, Taguig City.

The other Abu Sayyaf leaders killed were Alhamzer Limbong known as Abu Kosovo, Nadzmie Sabtulah alias Commander Global and their spokesman during the standoff, Sadit Abdul Ganit Husim, known as Ka Lando.

Cedo said the police based in the town of Talipao confirmed Amad's affiliation with the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) operating in the hinterland of Sulu.

"The arrest of this terrorist just proves that people of Sulu are supporting the anti-terrorist campaign of the AFP [Armed Forces of the Philippines]," Cedo said.

He appealed to the residents of Sulu for their cooperation stressing that ASG are not to be protected but rather be reported for apprehension.
