How to take back the streets from the leering creeps
Seattle Times ^ | September 27, 2006 | Andrea Otanez

I'D never buy a copy of Men's Health magazine, just like I'd never pay for People, Us or even Real Simple.

But that doesn't mean I don't sometimes flip through those magazines, and Men's Health is now diversion No. 1 one when I spy a copy at the gym or doctor's office.

All because of this tidbit from an article titled "Your To-Don't List — 19 things a man should never do":

"Leer ... pervert isn't a label you can just peel off."

The ellipses save you from salacious descriptions that detract from the main message. Photos throughout the magazine of women's bodies, tousled hair but no names likewise undermine the sincerity. Still: As a woman reading an R-rated, straight-man's magazine that according to The New York Times has a circulation of "almost 1.8 million": Thank you.

Now, this is where some of you will say: "Here comes another feminist rant against men's innocent and sometimes physically uncontrollable impulse to appreciate the beauty of the opposite sex."

And here's where I say, "What is the member of the opposite sex supposed to do with those moments when a man visually takes in her whole body, top to bottom — without apology or even embarrassment — as if entitled to something?"

I'm not talking about quick glances. I'm talking about appraising stares that render many, many women of all ages uncomfortable once any shreds of embarrassed flattery run their course.

Maybe because I'm the mother of two young girls I've become an observer of men ogling teenage girls. They do it all the time, no matter what the teenagers are wearing or what they are doing. I find myself superimposing my kid on those teenagers' bodies and I get creeped out.

That'll be my daughter buying the bag of Kettle Korn...

Michael Medved was discussing this article on Thursday's 2nd hour of his show. The author would not come on his show so he had on a radio producer from his home station's sister station. Tina, I believe, something or other. She said to the affect that a woman should be able to walk down the street naked with a sign on her that said come rape me and men should take no notice.

Anyway, here are the clips from Michael's show if you would like to listen later. This particular hour, the second hour from Thursday, October 5, should be up later today.

http://www.townhall.com/talkradio/Show.aspx?RadioShowID=4

Also, here is the Holla Back main website that is referred to in the Seattle article if you would like to take a peek:

http://hollabacknyc.blogspot.com/2005/10/street-harassment-failure-of-law-to.html

Their main page states:

Holla Back NYC empowers New Yorkers to Holla Back at street harassers. Whether you're commuting, lunching, partying, dancing, walking, chilling, drinking, or sunning, you have the right to feel safe, confident, and sexy, without being the object of some turd's fantasy. So stop walkin' on and Holla Back: Send us pics of street harassers!

Personally, I know men can be aggressive. I've experienced it--more when I was younger and thinner, but even on a bus when I was VERY pregnant with my first son and once when I was in a cafeteria when I was not so thin. That being said, I think women in general are partially responsible for the in your face aggression we are seeing from men. I think the Florida Spring Break, MTV, Girls Gone Wild, porn culture we live in is bringing more of this bad side out.

Anyway, the woman on Medved today really didn't think women had any responsibility in this at all.

I had a "lady" push me the other day for my attempting to hold a door open for her. She snarled that she was quite capable of opening the door herself.

Nevertheless, I shall continue to be courteous to women, as most of them appreciate the effort.

Like we can help it? I try not to look, but it's impossible.

I hold the door for man, woman, child but there have been times that I wished I hadn't wasted the little bit of effort. Not even a thank you. Some people have no manners at all. If you would have held the door for me, I would have made sure to thank you.

If you can do whatever you want with your womb then I can do whatever I want with my eyes. I'm pro-choice when it comes to leering.

Well some women think they should have control over your eyes too. They should be able to shove their boobs in your face and your eyes better be looking at the ceiling. I like your point BTW.

Women want it both ways, as usual (and that's fine!). But when I see a young woman tugging at her top, trying to cover the small of her back (often as not tatooed nowadays) or otherwise acting self-conscious about her inadequate clothing, I have to ask: `darling, who told you to wear that miniskirt, anyway?'

All the while, I'm praying silently: 'I thank Thee, Lord, for granting Thy humble servant this vision of some of the beautiful things which Thou hast made!"

She pushed you? Big no no in today's society. How does she know you are not a Muslim male who must behead her to correct the stain on his honor?

As soon as the technology allows, I'm sure that there will be pay-per-view rights that electronically prevent mens' eyeballs from straying unless they pony up big time.

The way it is right now, it like an illegal download from the net. Those are property rights you're stealing from a well endowed woman.

Of course if that encourages women to take better care of themselves then all men will benefit.

Well you could always buy a big black 'tent'to cover yourself and your daughters head to toe with little slots for the eyes so you can all see where you are going...... Very American.

The clothes from Sluts 'R Us might have something to do with the situation.

The difference between flirting and harassment is how good looking the man was.

I, being homely, hideous and grotesque, take great pains to avoid looking at women in this PC world of getting canned for any infraction of the sort.

No great loss for me or them, according to this article.

Good. I wish there were more like you. And I can assure you that the bitter harridan who pushed you is in the minority. I'm embarrassed for people like that.
