BERNALILLO, N.M. -- The media aide to gubernatorial candidate John Dendahl is reported in critical condition from a brutal beating suffered in Bernalillo Monday night.
Paige McKenzie was attacked in the First Community Bank parking lot after pulling in to change a flat tire while on her way home.
Now there are reports she may have recognized her attacker.
Her injuries are so severe she is now reported to be on a respirator to assist her breathing at UNM Hospital.
Dendahl, the Republican candidate challenging Gov. Bill Richardson, said McKenzie apparently suffered trauma to her head including a broken jaw and smashed teeth.
Left behind at the scene inside McKenzie's car were her purse and a tire iron possibly used in the attack. She currently is listed in critical condition.
Doctors at UNM Hospital also said before they sedated McKenzie, she told them she recognized her attacker.
Police dispatchers in Rio Rancho got the call for help from McKenzie just after 7 p.m., but Dendahl said he wasn't notified until later in the evening..
“I was shocked,” he said. “Paige is a vivacious, pretty and really smart young woman, and she's been subjected to a heinous crime.
“We in the campaign, her friends in the Republican party and her friends in the press of New Mexico are really distraught about this."
McKenzie apparently called one of her friends for help although it's unclear whether that call was made during or after the attack.
Bernalillo police are investigating the attack. No arrests have been made.
That's supposed to be the GOP Gov candidate's aide.

I really would like to know where this rumor that she recognized her attacker comes from. From all I have heard she has not been able to communicate since the attack happened.

I think she told the medical personnel in the ER or the OR. Hopefully, she will make a full recovery. NO ONE should every have to go through such a terrible beating. IF, it should turn out to have been someone connected to Richardson, he will lose this election big time.

What a truly horrendous attack.
That would be the only point in which it may have happened, but comming from someone who has had his jaw broken, that's not an easy thing to do. And her level of trama far exceeded what condition I was in.
Doctor should have got the name before sleepy time. It would have taken less than 5 seconds. Stupid. Maybe they did and are just not saying anything to the press. Wonder how old she was. They have CCW in NM.

We know the Lib's "base" has busted GOP headquarters, ransacked them, stolen their data bases. Scatched up cars, torn up campaign signs, slashed van tires...it's not so much of a stretch someone he may have no connection to but wants his re-election could have done this. One of the thugs on the street that has committed other forms of harrassment and vandalism listed above.

The RATS had union thugs beat people in CA when they were trying to recall Gray Davis. I wish they would have got the name too, but she may not have been able to think what the person's name is. I sure hope they put a guard at her door.

Madrid is blaming Wilson for the Foley Scandal. Wilson was on the Page Committee, 2001-2004. Wilson never saw the e-mails. Madrid says Wilson wasn't pro-active enough. Apparently as NM Attorney General, Madrid, isn't proactive enough to protect this young girl.
All you have to do is look at the Vigil case to know that Madrid is incompetent.

Wow, do you get NM political ads in IL? LOL Good grief, I hope not. :) The race between Wilson and Madrid is getting pretty nasty, and I suppose it's going to get worse the closer to the election we get. Madrid is very corrupt.
I read about the Wilson vs. Madrid race on National Review. Madrid's original plan was to blast the Iraqi War. But Wilson can speak about Iraqi with more authority. She served in the first Gulf War. Given that fact, why isn't Wilson treated with more respect by the media. After all, the media worshipped Murtha.
