David Brooks' New York Times column of this morning on the Foley matter, "A Tear in Our Fabric," is so important that I'd normally be inclined to simply reproduce it in its entirety and let it speak for itself. But as a subscription-required item, I hesitate to do that. I do offer an extended-but-edited excerpt for our readers' consideration:
"This is a tale of two predators. The first is a congressman who befriended teenage pages. He sent them cajoling instant messages asking them to describe their sexual habits, so he could get his jollies.
"The second is a secretary, who invited a 13-year-old girl from her neighborhood into her car and kissed her. Then she invited the girl up to her apartment, gave her some vodka, took off her underwear and gave her a satin teddy to wear.
"Then she had sex with the girl, which was interrupted when the girls mother called. Then she made the girl masturbate in front of her and taught her some new techniques.
"The first predator, of course, is Mark Foley, the Florida congressman. The second predator is a character in Eve Enslers play, The Vagina Monologues.
"But why is one sexual predator despised and the other celebrated?
"Enslers audiences . . . are embracing . . . a moral code thats been called expressive individualism. Under this code, the core mission of life is to throw off the shackles of social convention and to embark on a journey of self-discovery. Behavior is not wrong if it feels good and doesnt hurt anybody else. Sex is not wrong so long as it is done by mutual consent.
"In a country filled with parents looking for a way to raise their children in a morally disordered environment, Foleys act is just one more symptom of a contagious disease.
"In the long run, the party that benefits from events like the Foley scandal will be the party that defines the core threats to the social fabric, and emerges as the most ardent champion of moral authority."
Wise words.
David Brooks-NYTimes/NewsBusters double-standard ping to Today show list.
This is a re-post of my earlier item, reformatted to indicate more clearly those paras which are quoted from the Brooks column and which are my commentary.
Foley's crime is that he is a Republican.
Reality Ping
Compared to Ted Bundy, that is....
The standard the Democrats have isn't so high, why else would they push for the age of consent to be lowered?
My School Committee voted to enact a program sponsored by the Superintendant to ask 5th graders how many sexual partners they have. The lone Republican on the committee was the only one to vote no. The student advisor, when asked if kids would lie on this survey laughed out loud and said "of course!"
I am appalled, but not surprised, and have been that way for quite a while.
The only constructive comment I can offer is: homeschool. The result will be your 10 year old will be educated in language, math, science, and history while the public school kids will be educated in sex and it's applications.
I'll take Larry Flynt, and NAMBLA for $500, Nate.

CLAIM: FILTHY FOLEY ONLINE MESSAGES WERE PAGE PRANK GONE AWRY
**World Exclusive**
**Must Credit the DRUDGE REPORT**
According to two people close to former congressional page Jordan Edmund, the now famous lurid AOL Instant Message exchanges that led to the resignation of Mark Foley were part of an online prank that by mistake got into the hands of enemy political operatives, the DRUDGE REPORT can reveal.
According to one Oklahoma source who knows the former page very well, Edmund, a conservative Republican, goaded Foley to type embarrassing comments that were then shared with a small group of young Hill politicos. The prank went awry when the saved IM sessions got into the hands of political operatives favorable to Democrats. This source, an ally of Edmund, also adamantly proclaims that the former page is not a homosexual. The prank scenario was confirmed by a second associate of Edmund.
The news come on the heels that former FBI Chief Louis Freeh has been named to investigate the mess.
Developing...
If some teacher had asked me that in any grade I would have been shocked and probably broke down in tears and wonder what in the Heck is wrong with them. I would have told my parents. Teacher would have been run out of town. Probably would still happen today in the same town.
Great examples of hypocrisy. I liked Ann Coulter's points in her column this week too:
We need to get a rulebook from the Democrats:
Boy Scouts: As gay as you want to be.
Priests: No gays!
Democratic politicians: Proud gay Americans.
Republican politicians: Presumed guilty.
White House press corps: No gays, unless they hate Bush.
Active-duty U.S. military: As gay as possible.
This is probably a smaller town, and there are many like this all over America, thank goodness.
