Workers on Thursday began removing the cross-shaped steel beams that were left standing in the rubble of the World Trade Center five years ago, and prepared to move them to a temporary home at a nearby church. The 20-foot-tall artifact was discovered in the smoking ruins two weeks after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and became a symbol for recovery workers, family and later construction crews at the site.
It will be moved to the exterior wall of nearby St. Peter's Church during construction at the trade center site. The World Trade Center Memorial Foundation has said it plans to include the cross as part of its memorial or inside the Sept. 11 museum.

I'm taking bets on whether it makes it back. 50 to one odds against.
With the help of the ACLU.
I had the honnor of kissing this cross.
Nah it will make it back. NYers have a special love for that cross!
Do they? I'm glad to hear it. If I remember correctly, there were also several smaller crosses at the foot of this one, is that right, or have I listened to Art Bell once too often?
Oh I'm sure NYers PLUS the 9/11 families won't let this go. I don't know about the smaller crosses. Never heard that one.
Muzzie bastards.
Bull. Once on the church grounds, it'll never be allowed to return to the site. The separation of church and state loons will never permit it back.
Sad. You can bet the ACLU and the muzzies are already formulating their plans to prevent this cross from assuming its rightful place in the WTC memorial. Dirty b*stards.
Don't worry the Cross will be well preserved in one of the side sections of the future Mosque of America to be erected on the site.
What happened to that filthy Muzzie rat who attacked a different cross memorial a few days ago? The story seems to have been buried.
You of little faith! Do you not see that the Cross remains when the Coliseum is a wreck; while Lenin lies dead; where Mao is diminished; while the mortal remains of Hitler rest on a shelf in Moscow?
The Cross is a symbol, but it is a symbol of greatness. It is the ultimate act of Power refraining from destruction, but in great humility letting His creations kill him. It is a symbol of love. If God were as the Muslims say He were, He would crush us; indeed, to a Muslim, we are at best Slaves of God. But instead, the Cross shows that we are not beyond salvation. Indeed, the One who bore the Cross and died on it rose again, displaying His scarred hands and side.
So this is for the Christian, those who do not merely cling to symbols but whose spirits have been renewed by the actions of the Holy Spirit. Christians can be killed; their churches burned; their Bibles scattered; but the Cross remains, for true strength comes in weakness.
I do not fear Islam. I do not fear those who at the worst can kill me. Jesus is Lord. Through Him, I am more than a conqueror, because He conquered.
Islam will die, for it does not know all of God's works. The greatest work was the Cross.
Easy now. What I don't have faith in is Mayor Bloomberg and his band of liberals in City government. The People of New York want the Cross on the site, and so do I. And not in a "museum". It should be set upon hallowed ground with areas for prayers. Yes, an "offical" recognition of religion--SHOCK! The People must fight to make sure this happens.
I don't worry about that. The Cross will be a memorial, whether government says so or not. We can always peacefully disobey injunctions against it.
they had best start organizing, because with Pataki gone, there are no voices of reason left in the process. I heard Bloomberg on wabc radio this am - asked whether the freedom center museum issue was going to come back, he hedged - I took that as a "yes".
