(Kyodo) - North Korea could conduct a nuclear bomb test "as early as Sunday," the anniversary of Kim Jong Il's appointment as head of the Workers Party of Korea in 1997, the Washington Post reported Thursday, quoting several U.S. government analysts."It may also be timed to coincide with an election at the United Nations on Monday during which Ban Ki Moon, South Korea's foreign minister, is expected to be chosen as the next U.N. secretary general," the report said.
Tuesday's statement by Pyongyang that it will carry out a nuclear test did not set a date for the test.

Ambassador Chris Hill essentially threatened North Korea of going out of 'existence' if they dare test. Yesterday, in D.C. I am sure he was cleared to say that.

I agree. I can't find one person in my office who is even aware of what's going on in Asia. They all know about Mark Foley. Pitiful.
We still have lots of Guard heavy forces that could be thrown into the fight. Some might take over in the sandbox, but I doubt there'd be time to make the swap. In fact I doubt there'd be time to move any significant ground forces to Korea. Navy and Air Force aren't very much occupied at the moment though, and they'd be enough to turn everything important in NK into a smoking ruin. The question would be whether they could do it fast enough to prevent the destruction of Seoul.
I can't think of any way to save Seoul.
Cluster bombs and aerial mining may thwart a massive influx of troops from the north though.

A US official said: “We have seen some activity in the area — personnel, vehicles, materials, things of that nature.” The movements were spotted recently at one of a number of suspected sites that are closely monitored by the Americans. One option being discussed last night at the United Nations would be a Security Council resolution that warns North Korea that it could face further international isolation. While Japan is pressing for the move, China and South Korea favour persuading North Korea to return to six-party talks it broke off last year. Beyond concern about the immediate impact of a nuclear test on the region are the longer-term consequences on North Asia, which many fear could undergo a dramatic military escalation

I hear that Chia Head habitually ruined holidays of some government officials working at N. Korea-related matters. He always does something while they are on holidays, and had to be hastily called back to duty.:)
This time he is going to ruin the holidays of all S. Koreans, if he tests it on Oct. 8. He will not win popularity points. Due to N. Korean announcement on coming nuclear test, on top of bad economy, the holiday spirit is half-ruined already.
