Incumbent Virginia Sen. George Allen, who has suffered through some serious campaign missteps in recent weeks and days, is now making a comeback. Those problems had resulted in the loss of a big lead over Democratic challenger James Webb, but it now appears Allen is once again on solid ground. He leads Webb, 48% to 37%, with 13% yet undecided. Allen is the only Republican in the 10 Senate races featured in the Reuters/Zogby poll to hold a double-digit lead.

The backfire against the dems is firing up all over the country. Irey is zooming up and there is a chance Murtha is even gone in a few months.

All the Sudden things begin to "sour" for Webb.

This is especially good news--given the fact that he will likely lose ALL of the MACACAN vote.

You're exactly right. This is the DNC coming in to attempt to thwart Senator Allen. The Salon article, Larry Sabato, and all the other crap didn't originate in Virginia (yes I know Larry is at UVA - but dig deeper). Senator Allen is a strong conservative that has continually won, been elected to multiple offices (delegate, representative, governor, and senator), and appealed to a wide range of Virginia voters. He also led the 2004 RNC Senatorial Campaign that produced historic results including the outing of Tom Daschle. The DNC has to try and take him out, demoralize his base, and/or damage him at any cost. This is their SOP for Republican candidates.

A double digit win will make the DNC shutter. If you're in Virginia, it's time to pile it on. It will also make the DNC wonder about Hillary being a lightning rod. She has been in the Commonwealth recently (don't know if this corresponds directly to the poll) campaigning for Webb.

Zogby's numbers seem different from other pollsters. Even if Allen is not this far ahead, it still helps build momentum and optimism among Republicans just to see a candidate ahead in any poll.

I just hope Zogby is right about Dewine being even in OH since some had written him off. Their poll also shows Burns down only 4 in MT? If so that is a major gain. So while it is still likely the GOP will lose ground, I am beginning to think it might just be 2 or 3 seats. Not good, but not the disaster it could have been. Of course things can still change a lot in 33 days, for better or worse. We shall see.

I think the Socialists/Dems fear Allen because he reminds them of Clinton. A Tall gentlemen with southern charm that whether he's good or evil wraps up the "non thinking" (vote with their eyes and emotions) female voters. This is a huge demographic that they counted on Clinton to fool and were hoping to have Hillary or possibly Lurch posess. Allen takes that away from them as well as the Nascar, Conservatives, many Southern Democrats, Real Men and Thinking Women.

Thus the reason I swore off election night bourbon back in the 80s.

Oh, thanks for the reminder! (I haven't sworn it off)...

I live in Richmond, Va. Am a HUGE George Allen fan! I want nothing more than a landslide Allen re-election but, if we're this excited about his poll numbers being so positive, why aren't we equally depressed about negative poll numbers for other GOP candidates. When do the polls count and when don't they?

Dems do it every election season. They overreach and anger the Republican base with their lies and vitriol.

This could be one interesting November.

Hmm...Hillary appears with Webb and suddenly Allen is in double digits. Cause/Effect?

If Murtha comes in and backs Webb, Webb might be behind another 5-10 points.

I can only work on one race at a time!

I'm interested in returning George Allen to the Senate and Eric Cantor to the House. I'm also pulling for Thelma Drake.

But this is my focus race. Plus, this has been the RAT focus race with their orchestrated smear campaign.

I hope the others pull it off. I'm just doing my part in the Old Dominion.

wraps up the "non thinking" (vote with their eyes and emotions) female voters ... Allen takes that away from them as well as the Nascar, Conservatives, many Southern Democrats, Real Men and Thinking Women.

Don't forget pro football fans, likely one of the largest demographics out there, because of Allen's dad's name/history as head coach of the Washington Redskins.

I've said it on other threads and will say it again - Allen is a general election winner against Hillary in '08, unless they can destroy him in the starting gate.
