Scranton -- Rep. Don Sherwood, a Republican fighting for re-election in northeastern Pennsylvania, says in a TV ad that he is "truly sorry" for cheating on his wife but denies ever abusing the woman he had the affair with.

In the ad, he acknowledges that the affair nearly cost him the love of his wife and his daughters. He said his family has worked through it "because of my deep regret, our love and the fact that the allegation of abuse was never true."

"While I'm truly sorry for disappointing you, I never wavered from my commitment to reduce taxes, create jobs and bring home our fair share," Sherwood said, addressing viewers. "Should you forgive me, you can count on me to keep on fighting hard for you and your family."

Sherwood, a four-term congressman, has a seat that had been considered safe until it was revealed last year that police in 2004 investigated an incident between Sherwood and Cynthia Ore at his Washington apartment.

Charges were never filed,

My understanding is that PA voters had a good chance to get rid of him during the primaries.

Sherwood won the primary with 56% of the vote, against a political newbie who spent $5,000 on her campaign. The writing was on the wall.

And it took a lot of Establishment support, Santorum, to get that 56%.

When they would have been better off shoving him out the door.

Was Monica really 19 when she serviced Bill Clinton?

I thought she was 34 or 24.

The opponent's ad mentions his affair and castigates Sherwood? I guess it's fine for lefty Dems to do it. But in 1998 at the mere suggestion that Republicans run ads criticizing Clinton for the Monica scandal, the Dems screamed bloody murder and all the pundits and talking heads said it was dirty and would backfire. After all, it was not right to impugn a man's personal life. The GOP quickly backed off.

What a hypocritical joke the Demo party is.

I wish they did shove him out the door. I live in Sherwood's district and will vote for him because there's not much choice. A vote for Carney is a vote for Pelosi as Speaker.

Sherwood's primary opponent wasn't much of an opponent but was actually a former dem who saw an opportunity. She really wasn't a viable alternative.

What they should have done was recruit someone good and talked Sherwood into retiring instead of running again.

Hastert has habit of protecting the team no matter what. In 2001, Sen. Peter Fiztgerald wanted to recommend to President Bush a US Attorney for Northern IL to investigate corruption in my state (IL). Hastert tried to sidestep Fiztgerald and urge Bush appoint by his own recommendation for US Attorney. Bush appointed Patrick Fiztgerald, Sen. Peter's choice. Since then, Peter Fiztgerald's relationship with the IL GOP soured. Hastert's "Protect the Team" approach has damaged our 2006 prospects.

alter, the GOP did nail Bob Menendez in NJ and Phil Kellam in Virginia on his hidden Assault Charge. The DEMS will be next.

Kuksool, the irony is that Patrick Fitzgerald screwed up the Plamegate affair and held Rove on a string for a year, when he knew it was Armitage all along.

So Hastert sunk Senator Fizgerald in 2002 and tried to sink Coburn in October 2004.

And talked Foley into running again for 2006.

With friends like this guy, who needs enemies.

It's just gonna get worse folks. This is exactly the question the immoral Dems want us to ask over and over: "Well, why should I vote for such an immoral man?"

Believe me, they can find something on every single GOP member of Congress, including St. Ron (Paul). Do not fall for this BS.

Neo, good point on Coburn. We have to ask ourselves if Haesert resigning helps the GOP, or admits guilt?

The best scenario would be The Speaker resigning after the elections and not cave into the liberal media.

I have written many times on this subject, and it still doesn't change the fact that when you are in the public service of people who voted for you, you have NO business doing anything if married, gay, or whatever you are except be true to the morals that the people voted you into office with.

When you start to violate those morals, then the person should resign the office immediately. Don Sherwood isn't one bit sorry for anything other than he got caught, therefore he should have resigned.

I don't care if your Republican, Democrat, or Independent, green, brown, pink or purple, if you do the crime, get out of the office.

I did not give him my vote to dishonor it in this manner and I shall never give him or anyone like my vote again.

I agree.

Hang tough through November then pull a political Brutus on Hastert.

I don't know. You don't win by apologizing. Make the OTHER damn guy apologize.

It's amazing, sometimes, to think this was the party that once knew to tell voters "Vote how you shot!"
