Scranton -- Rep. Don Sherwood, a Republican fighting for re-election in northeastern Pennsylvania, says in a TV ad that he is "truly sorry" for cheating on his wife but denies ever abusing the woman he had the affair with.

In the ad, he acknowledges that the affair nearly cost him the love of his wife and his daughters. He said his family has worked through it "because of my deep regret, our love and the fact that the allegation of abuse was never true."

"While I'm truly sorry for disappointing you, I never wavered from my commitment to reduce taxes, create jobs and bring home our fair share," Sherwood said, addressing viewers. "Should you forgive me, you can count on me to keep on fighting hard for you and your family."

Sherwood, a four-term congressman, has a seat that had been considered safe until it was revealed last year that police in 2004 investigated an incident between Sherwood and Cynthia Ore at his Washington apartment.

Charges were never filed,

He justifies his adultery by saying his service is indispensable to the rest of us. You have to wonder whether he's sorry he had the affair, he was sorry he got caught, or he's sorry he's in danger of losing his job.

If you are a Republican and you have an affair, you are scum of the Earth and you deserve to be voted out of office.

But if you are a Rat and you have an affair and say a lady drowns or the girl you are having an affair with is a 19 year old Intern, then you are celebrated and your poll numbers go up.

The world we live in, thanks to the press and the Rats, is truly upside down.

Why is this guy paying good money to run an ad which basically just features him apologizing? Everytime you turn on the TV, it's a Republican apologizing for this or that. They should rename this the Apologizers' Party.

Stop apologizing and start beating Democrats! What's wrong with the GOP?

A Republican adulterer is a big deal. A Democratic adulterer is a guaranteed ticket to higher office.

Beats me! Why the hell is this guy paying money to run an ad so voters can see him apologize? This is the worst campaign tactic I've ever heard of!

Sherwood's opponent has an ad out featuring a "republican Sherwood supporter" who can't vote for him because of the affair. The guy even holds up a picture of his daughter for effect. Sherwood prbably felt he had to answer the ad.

Because he made a TV ad apologizing for it? He's the idiot who is keeping this alive in the media now...

If you don't go looking for trouble, you'll have never to say "I'm sorry." What is it with Congresscritters who think they'll never get caught, I don't know.

Its a big deal b/c Sherwood is in a repub district and is getting trounced in the polls b/c his base has deserted him due to his 5yr affair.

And his own ad is completely pathetic...a hail mary pass.

When you are losing big in a solidly Republican district, you do unusual things.

My understanding is that PA voters had a good chance to get rid of him during the primaries.

his family has worked through it "because of my deep regret, our love and the fact that the allegation of abuse was never true."

The fact that he (allegedly) DID NOT choke her helped his family "work through it" ???

I'd like to hear THAT conversation:

"Yes, dear, I boinked her a few times. But I DID NOT choke her, I swear!"

It's not bad politics, if it's done right. It's what Ted Kennedy did after Chappaquiddick. The speech he made was a classic--I had to study it in grad school. It's probably what kept him in his senate seat all these years.

Sherwood's opponent has an ad out featuring a "republican Sherwood supporter" who can't vote for him because of the affair.

It is really the rankest hypocrisy for Democrats to be using what they called a "private matter" when Clinton committed perjury to conceal an affair with an intern to now be using that as a reason to turn a congressman out of office. Perhaps the voter featured in this ad was just as offended at Clinton, but I doubt Sherwood's opponent was and I doubt that she would have suggested it was a reason to not support Clinton during the late 90s. Has any press person bothered to ask her this or is it just the usual fawning coverage given to any DemoCrite with zero critical review of what they say??

Another lost seat for the (R)s. It's over. Speaker Pelosi can start measuring those drapes.
