With a widely quoted, non-partisan newsletter downgrading his chances to retain his seat in Congress and new independent poll showing him behind by 8.5 points, Don Sherwood plans to bring in Republican leaders, including President Bush, to raise money for him this month, a local party leader said Monday.
House Majority Leader John Boehner of Ohio will appear this evening at a $25-per-head fundraiser at the Montdale Country Club in Lackawanna County. And House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois is scheduled to make a similar appearance on Oct. 18 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Clarks Summit, according to Lackawanna County Republican Party Chairman Paul Catalano.
The details of the Bush visit, planned for mid-month, are still sketchy, Catalano said, primarily because the White House has not confirmed a date or location due to security.
I think its a go, but they wont give us word until it gets a little closer, he said.
The White House press office said it could not confirm a local visit. The presidents schedule is normally not available until a week before any event.
Sherwood, who benefited from a Wyoming County fundraiser featuring Vice President Dick Cheney last month, is in a tight race with Democrat Chris Carney, a 47-year-old Penn State political science professor and officer in the Navy Reserve.
On Monday, the Polling Institute at Lycoming College released a poll showing Carney ahead 46.7 to 38.2 percent in a survey of 804 likely voters taken by Lycoming political-science students Sept. 24-28. The poll, which has a margin of error of 3.5 percent, showed Carney with the support of 26 percent of the Republicans in the heavily GOP district.
The only other independent, non-partisan poll of the race, taken in late August, showed Carney ahead by seven points.

Don't worry (much) for US Congress, the proble is US Senate.
I would argue that it's the exact opposite of that.
How can this be?? The district went 60% for bush in '04. If I was reading CQ correctly, Sherwood was unopposed in '04 and got 93% of the vote? I find it hard to believe the bottom has fallen out so badly. If this poll is at all accurate then it would indicate the GOP is in deep trouble all over.
Sherwood is having scandal trouble, I think. He's definitely one of the most vulnerable incumbents. This poll is not surprising at all to me, really.
Why was this bogus poll even posted? Some third rate college does a poll of Left Wing professors and is Taken to doom and gloom I guess. Sherwood will win diue to GOTV.
Word is that the RNC knows the leaker of the Foley Emails and will wait to announce. It is a big fish.
Oh no. What did he do? If we cant hold a seat like this then there is big trouble. If there is a silver lining to this though it might be that GOP leaning districts where voters seem hell bent on electing Demos might go back to their normal tendencies in '08. But I wouldnt count on it. Once the Dems get control back they would do everything possible to never lose it again. Scary.
CQ still has 219 seats as firm or leaning Republican. That is good news. If they win just a small number of the up for grabs seats then they would be over 220. So that's a tenuous grip but at least they probably would not have to worry about party switching. I just hope CQ is right. Some of their other projections seem all wrong. They still list the CA and FL governorships as tossups even though Republicans lead.
This poll actually is close to the last Majority Watch poll of PA-10, as I stated in comment 1.
I have never heard of Majority watch or Lycoming college. I would just ask that those who post polling would only use reputable firms.
Majority Watch is the joint venture of a new company, Constituent Dynamics, and RT Strategies, an established and well-known bipartisan polling firm.
Constituent DYNAMICS is so new it does not even have a track record from the 2004 Elections.
Their web site is also amateur, I will only look at reputable firms thank you.
Crist had a 16 pt lead in the latest miami herald poll, tossup not
We need to weed out all these thrid rate pollsters and stick with the proven, especially with the unpredictable House races. I have no idea what the Sample between DEM and GOP is with these lame College polls. It is a waste time to post them here.
Sherwood should have just retire. Once again the theme of 2006 being the "Year of the Idiot GOP" continues.
I have many relatives in that district. People are just disgusted with Sherwood for carrying on a five-year affair. The district has a lot of Christians who take moral law very seriously.
If Sherwood had just led a more moral life, he could keep getting re-elected for the rest of his life. People liked him when they thought of him as the nice man with the car dealership who stood up for what is right.
Phil Kellam(D) running for the VA-2 Against Thelma Drake lied about a assault conviction where he punched a woman during a traffic stop.
At least for Sherwood he did not beat up a stranger.
I'm assuming Thelma is maintaining a usual lead in polling?
Oh no, what a moron. He should have retired too, along with Sen Burns.
I am hoping other incumbents like Wilson of NM and Reichert of WA will win. If we can hold a lot of the open seats, like Hyde's, then they can still eke out a narrow majority.
Yes Thelma is, and she will open up after the Kellam assault settles in.
Also today Bob Corker of TENN fired his campaign manager and replaced him with Lamar Alexander's chief of staff. check the blog at
