CVN-77 to be Christened on October 7th, 2006

On Saturday, October 7, 2006, Northrop Grumman Newport News will christen the nation’s 10th and final Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, George H. W. Bush (CVN 77). The ship’s namesake and 41st President of the United States, George H. W. Bush, is scheduled to attend the ceremony along with his wife Barbara and their daughter, Doro Bush Koch, Mrs. Koch also serves as the ship’s sponsor and will do the traditional honor of breaking a bottle of American sparkling wine across the ship’s bow during the ceremony. Employees of Northrop Grumman Newport News and their families are invited. The general public is also invited to the ceremony. Good. I heard about some testing on Nimitz class.
I have a good friend (Navy rotary; I was Army) who said the MK 15 Phalanx was a known bad joke because it was always broken --- no parts, hydraulic leaks, etc.

The Phalynx is slowly being replaced by RIM-116 RAM launchers which have amassed a sterling record of intercepts of incoming, high speed ASMs. New carriers are toating 2 RAM launchers (21 missiles each), 2 Sea Sparrow launchers (8 missiles each), and still 3 phalynx.
I had not heard it was a done deal...if so, I am sorely disappointed.

So if he gets the next carrier, then he'll get the next class named after him... Then the G.W. Bush carrier will be a Clinton-class carrier, ugh.
First thing Clinton did when he got into office was order "Don't Ask Don't Tell." First thing Bush did was order them a pay raise.
I'm sure they work great when working, as did the MK15.
But what is the % on operation?
A weapon system is only good when it can be deployed.
I do not believe Clinton will get a carrier...I pray with my heart and soul he does not. What a disgrace that would be.
The RAM is a proven design mating the latest stinger missile design with the latest Sidewinder seeker head. My understanding is that it has a very good maintenance record thus far.
The Navy is getting the George Washington ready for homeport move to Yokosuka, to replace the Kitty Hawk. Took a while to get the Japanese to accept a NUKE carrier.
Hampton Roads is lamenting the loss of the KW and the JFK, it is said that we will lose two carriers, one to Japan, one to Mayport, FL.
