The facts of the disgrace of Mark Foley, who was a Republican member of the House from a Florida district until he resigned last week, constitute a disgrace for every Republican member of Congress. Red flags emerged in late 2005, perhaps even earlier, in suggestive and wholly inappropriate e-mail messages to underage congressional pages. His aberrant, predatory -- and possibly criminal -- behavior was an open secret among the pages who were his prey. The evidence was strong enough long enough ago that the speaker should have relieved Mr. Foley of his committee responsibilities contingent on a full investigation to learn what had taken place, whether any laws had been violated and what action, up to and including prosecution, were warranted by the facts. This never happened....

My honest opinion is that if this scandal works and the dem/media manage to split the republicans before the election, then we deserve every bit of crap legislation they send out (and Bush signs) in the next two years. Of course I would also double or triple my contributions to GOA and NRA to fight a good fight, but it would be defense, just trying to keep the few 2-A rights we have managed to regain.
I'm STILL waiting for your response to Post # 3 . WHY should he resign ???
I might go along with you if I was assured any guilty DemocRAT would resign.
pls. read the entire editorial-'nuff said'.
If you don't like that idea, may I recommend a suitible police state somewhere else for your retirement.
One thing America doesn't need is another person who disputes the rights of the House of Representatives to set its own rules.
Ouch.
That is the 'horse' here; and it needs to come before the cart of any Repubs resigning..
Had Hastert done more. . .on the 'less' info that he had at the time; (no IM's. etc ..) then the Repubs would have been attacked for discriminating against Gays. . .there is a no win here for Repubs; save to get to the truth of this scandal. The first truth has been dealt with; perp Foley is gone. WHO/HOW/WHY this has erupted now. ..rather than 'then'; needs investigating.
The Dems are political terrorists; and theyk are feverishly engaged. Hastert is tossed; they will NOT be appeased. . .
Repubs need to change the dialogue; the focus here; and NOW.
If the Times wants someone to resign, they should call on all Senate republicans to resign. They've been a complete failure for Bush.
I agree with you. We should demand that Barney Franks lead the investigation.
One thing I would like to know..... When haven't the Republicans shown weakness in the face of the enemy? I'll give the Republicans one more pass this election, but if I don't see results, if the Republicans hold the House and Senate, I'm finished with the Republicans. The Republicans in DC had best wake up and grow a spine, I too am tired of the Republicans caving. I will not continue to vote for people who offer no results.
Didn't you know it is the responsibility of the Speaker of the House to monitor all private emails between members of congress and their pages and to take immediate action in the event there is any inappropriate language?
There are legit reasons why Congress should not be allowed to raid the White House. If the reverse is OK, then why not that? I was bewildered at first by Congress' reaction, but there are legitimate Constitutional reasons, having nothing to do with condoning Jefferson.
The Speaker should not resign. This has nothing to do his record on leading the House - which can be debated. This has to do with Republicans rolling over when there is a "scandal." Why do Republicans fall into the trap of resigning instead of fighting? Why do Democrats get to keep seats, committee assignments, etc. after they are convicted and/or compromised?
This whole Foley thing is a hit job - somone had this information for 3 YEARS and sat on it and the Republicans should go on the offensive to find that person or group. Not only were these person(s) playing a game of "gotcha"- they were putting more pages at risk.
Let's wait and see - I think we will find out the Rats involved and the whole thing will be exposed.
To be totally honest, I took the liberty of forwarding a link to this post to the feds.
If anyone thinks this coming out 30 days before an election is a mere accident, then they are out of touch with political reality in America. This is no accident. The problem apparently had festered and become closet knowledge.
Rather than innoculate themselves against it long ago, the leadership has allowed it to be used against them.
That is either negligence or incompetence....take your pick.
Worse, it plays into democrat hands right at election time, and darned if the democrats aren't the ones who SUPPORT that kind of thing.
The world is upside down where wrong is right and right is wrong.
He should not run for Leadership again, however.
There is some poetic justice in this, since Hastert now sees the 'gratitude' of the Democrats in his defending Jefferson.
