I can't see that small amount of damage to the smaller of the two aircraft in the collision being responsible for bringing down the larger plane.

Why did I the closest passenger to the impact hear no sound, no roar of a big 737?...[snip]...Mr. Prust took out a calculator and tapped away, figuring the time that would be available to hear the roar of a jet coming at another jet, each flying at over 500 miles an hour in opposite directions. He showed me the numbers. Its far less than a split second, he said. We both looked at the pilots slouched on couches across the room...
Interesting.
BTW, this article is first-rate journalism. And the NYTimes has this guy freelance writing for the Travel section???

I wonder if the larger plane had some kind of electronic collision warning device. Doubtful if the pilots of either plane going that fast towards each other would actually be able to see the other plane in time for an evasive manuever without such a device. Could be wrong.
Sounds like a need to invent a device that would kick in and go to auto-pilot to avoid a collision.

What a story! One of the scariest moments of my life I was on a Continental flight that had just taken off when the pilot did an evasive maneuver and jerked the plane up and to the left. For a split second out my window I saw a small private plane as the pilot jerked it down and to the right. We were close enough that I saw the pilot of the small planes face.

Thanks for the article. Really amazing stuff. I'm glad to see the NYT can occasionally be good for something.
