Threat Matrix: October 2006

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Karzai Says bin Laden Not in Afghanistan
-Full Story-

President Hamid Karzai has insisted that Osama bin Laden is not in his country, in the latest installment in a row with the leader of Pakistan who says the Al-Qaeda chief is in Afghanistan.

Other militant leaders including Islamist warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar were also not in the country, Karzai told reporters in a briefing about his visit to the United States that was overshadowed by the spat.

'I can assure you they are not in Afghanistan,' Karzai said yesterday after being asked for his reaction to comments by Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf who said Thursday that bin Laden is here.

Mystery illness death toll climbs to 15 in Panama (FRepidemiologists notice)
Reuters ^ | October 4, 2006 | Reuters

Posted on 10/05/2006 12:55:28 PM PDT by LurkedLongEnough

PANAMA CITY, Oct 4 (Reuters) - The death toll from a mystery illness in Panama has risen to at least 15, with seven others still suffering but recovering from fever, diarrhea and partial paralysis, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

Doctors do not know the cause but say the disease progresses rapidly to the renal system and causes neurological damage.

Three suffering from the unidentified illness died late on Tuesday in Panama City and another 12 deaths over the last month were confirmed to have been caused by the same disease, the ministry said.

The ministry declared a national epidemic alert on Tuesday.

The dead were all over 60 years of age and most were already suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney problems.

The illness does not seem to be contagious and dengue fever, influenza, West Nile virus and other illnesses have been ruled out.

Omeish is the head of the Muslim American Society. The topic: just how much of a problem does America have with jihadis recruiting in prisons?

Things really get hopping when Ingraham asks him whether he’d prefer to live under shari’a.

"Seizures of radioactive materials fuel 'dirty bomb' fears"
By Lewis Smith, Environment Reporter

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "SEIZURES of smuggled radioactive material capable of making a terrorist “dirty bomb” have doubled in the past four years, according to official figures seen by The Times.

Smugglers have been caught trying to traffick dangerous radioactive material more than 300 times since 2002, statistics from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) show. Most of the incidents are understood to have occurred in Europe.

The disclosures come as al-Qaeda is known to be intensfiying its efforts to obtain a radoactive device. Last year, Western security services, including MI5 and MI6, thwarted 16 attempts to smuggle plutonium or uranium. On two occasions small quantities of highly enriched uranium were reported missing. All were feared to have been destined for terror groups."

Bangladesh journalist, charged with sedition, viciously beaten
Israpundit ^ | October 5, 2006 | Jerry Gordon

Posted on 10/05/2006 2:53:18 PM PDT by Zionista Feminista

ATLAS ON THE AIR SAVE CHOUDHURY TONIGHT **TONIGHT***** RADIO SHOW*** TONIGHT***** ATLAS ON THE AIR TONIGHT TO DISCUSS HOW WE,THE PEOPLE, CAN SAVE CHOUDHURY SPECIAL GUEST: DR. RICHARD BENKIN, THE TIRELESS ADVOCATE WHO STRUGGLED TO SECURE THE RELEASE OF CHOUDHURY, PENDING HIS TRIAL ON OCTOBER 12th CHOUDHURY WAS RELIEVED OF HIS SECURITY DETAIL YESTERDAY AND ATTACKED BY THUGS VICIOUSLY TODAY. Click on this icon to listen TONIGHT 9pm EST CALL IN:(347) 996-3944 Joining me will be Jerry Gordon, Israpundit and other freedom fighters to secure this man's release.

Choudhury is in the fight for his life. Choudhury is a Bangladeshi journalist who is going on trial on October 12 for the bogus crime of sedition - punishable by death. In fact, Choudhury's only crime is believing that Muslims, Jews and Christians could get along. ACTION ITEMS: 1. Contact the Bangladeshi Ambassador to the U.S. Shamsher M. Choudhury at bdootwash@bangladoot.org or at 202-244-0183 and let him know that such behavior is unacceptable from "an ally of the U.S. in the war on terror." Bangladesh is currently the recipient of U.S. aid dollars and the government of Bangladesh needs to know that U.S. citizens will not stand for such behavior. 2. Contact Congressman Mark Kirk of Illinois to thank him for championing the cause of Mr. Choudhury. Congressman Kirk was able to secure Mr. Choudhury's release from prison once before after threatening to withhold U.S. aid to Bangladesh and his efforts to stop this severe human rights abuse should be encouraged. UPDATE: CHOUDHURY BEATING Soaib Chourdhury, courageous Bengali journalist attacked by 'hooligans' in Dhaka, the Bangladesh capitol , today. by Jerry Gordon and Dr. Richard Benkin Dr. Richard Benkin, human rights advocate received a phone call from besieged Bengali journalist, Shoaib Chourdhury. At approximately 1:00PM, Dhaka time today, Mr. Choudhury was viciously attacked at his newspaper by what he termed 'hooligans,' including open Islamic radicals and members of the ruling Bangladesh National Party (BNP). He identified one of his attackers as Helal Khan, International Affairs Secretary, Cultural Wing of the BNP. As they were beating him, his attackers called Mr. Choudhury an "agent of Jews." He has received treatment for his injuries, but security for both he and his family has not be renewed. It was withdrawn this week after Deputy Commissioner Shafiqul Islam received an anonymous letter complaining about the protection provided Mr. Choudhury after a bomb attack on his paper this past summer was deemed 'false.' This vicious attack on Mr. Choudhury comes just days before his scheduled appearance before an acknowledged Islamist judge (a member of the radical Jamaat ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh) in a Dhaka courtroom October 12th. Mr. Choudhury, an anti-terrorist Muslim and interfaith advocate, faces sedition charges and a possible death sentence for his efforts. Yesterday, Mr. Chourdhury was 'cut off' in mid conversation during a radio interview on the ZOA Middle east report ion WNWR.com that originates out of Philadelphia with both he and Dr. Benkin and program co-hosts, Lori Lowenthal Marcus and Steve Feldman.

I am not a big fan of Hamid Mir, but this article is tendentious trash. I suppose it is not surprising when rabid, frothing, glazed-eyed, self-professed experts go on TV, radio, or the internet, take the legitimate nuclear terrorism threat, and then spin it into rumor-based, worst-case scenarios to sell their books or internet newsletter subscriptions, that the extreme skeptics on the other side of the argument will react in kind. Already disbelieving the severity of the threat itself, they then have a field day, engage in their own "spin" and "trash talk" (albeit with more eloquence and better footnoting), taking some of the scaremongering silliness that the "Hiroshima" folks typically exhibit, and use it to justify their own preconceived skeptical biases - - which are just as illegitimate, and just as false, but are more likely to have a patina of academic credibility.

The most tendentious and misleading claim is that "credible experts have largely discounted the threat of al-Qaeda's possession of suitcase nuclear devices." It is the central "straw man" argument. The dubious details of Hamid Mir's specific claims are then used to implicitly downplay the threat the "mythical" Shukrijumah poses in particular, and the threat of nuclear terror in general.

The idea that al Qaeda has briefcased-sized bombs is a misnomer since the weapons that would be most likely to be fashioned/assembled would be roughly the size of a footlocker, not a brief case, and take two men to carry any significant distance. So, it is true that it is highly unlikely that al Qaeda has a "suitcase nuke" - - literally meaning a weapon the size of a small suitcase. To illustrate the point, Iran and North Korea are light years more capable than al Qaeda and have many times the resources and external assistance, and they have had to face the challenge of miniaturizing their nuclear warheads to make them deliverable by missile.

But setting up the straw man of "suitcase nukes" obscures the real threat of slightly larger, yet very portable nuclear devices assembled from modern-era, not Cold War components. This other straw man argument commonly used centers on whether actual components or materials would have any use given the elapsed time since the end of the Cold War. It is irrelevant. The technology has already spread, as has the expertise. The only remaining issue is the actual material for assembling a weapon from scratch. One can access much of what one needs "off the shelf" for the right price. One need not reverse-engineer a 20 or 30 year old weapon.

The threat of smuggling the components of a "non-suitcase" bomb through a port or across the Canadian border (and to a lesser extent across the southern border) is real. Anyone who thinks that Russia has had control of all its fissile material for the past 15 years, or that North Korea would never transfer such material that they may have acquired in the past (above and beyond their own program), or that Iran is not crazy enough to transfer uranium from a covert enrichment program - - such a person is completely divorced from reality. And anyone who thinks very small amounts of critical material over time, with appropriate shielding and knowledge of our security measures, cannot be infiltrated into our country through a port or other entry point, is likely smoking something that was similarly infiltrated across the border.

Hamid Mir is like a Pakistani "Geraldo". I never take what he says at face value. But it is as stupid to prematurely write off what his contacts tell him as it would be to blindly accept it. I really couldn't care less about the credibility of Hamid Mir. I care about who he talks to and what they tell him. Even assuming the threats are 100% disinformation, the nature of that disinformation has value. And whatever the validity of the specific threat, it does not change the fact that any given morning, we could very well wake up to our own nuclear 9/11. Any morning.

In any case, this is not about Mir, but the people who Mir claims to interview. When someone associated with al Qaeda uses Mir to disseminate a message, it is irresponsible to shoot the messenger (whatever one may think of them). And I *know* (choosing that word deliberately) that the nuclear threat is very real. It was very real before 9/11, and it grows worse by the minute. So while I cannot express in words the absolute disrespect I have for those who sensationalize and over-hype the threat (as so many have recently - - possibly including Mir), it is equally disingenuous for some supposed "experts" (who really do not have the credibility that someone might have like Mir who actually interviews Taliban and al Qaeda) to lurch to the opposite extreme and use the opportunistic hysteria of some to create their own straw man argument that they can then attack to cynically validate their own ignorant skepticism (in effect, throwing the baby out with the bath water).

The hysterical "experts" cry "wolf" and the skeptical "experts" deny the wolf exists, and both unwittingly end up lulling the village to sleep before the nuclear wolf comes down to eat them alive, as he almost certainly will one day. As another, much more respected analyst at Jamestown (Michael Scheuer, who was chief of the UBL team at the CIA for almost a decade up until two years ago, and who probably has had more access to the true state of affairs than anyone currently opining) puts it, an al Qaeda nuclear attack is "pretty close to being inevitable".

The most tendentious and misleading claim is that "credible experts have largely discounted the threat of al-Qaeda's possession of suitcase nuclear devices."

That was the one line that struck me as well. The claim is never even really backed up in the analysis, and it is clearly ignoring voices that should be considered before the rest (his colleague at Jamestown most certainly included). Of course, there is also Graham Allison, and we probably shouldn't ignore someone like Warren Buffet who has proclaimed a nuclear attack on America is almost a given in the coming years.

It's somewhat easy to dismiss the threat because it is such a grand undertaking. The facts are out there for those who care to look though - detailed research will show that it is clearly not an impossibility.

The STRATFOR piece a few weeks back about Adnan and the threat was even more dismissive. 9/11 didn't teach the "experts" to stop thinking inside the box.

Thank you for the ping Velveeta, and the list & links all4one. There are more incidents in one day of this nature than any person can know. I have a number of google alerts that I receive each day, and the school+threats, bomb+threats, and lockdowns alone could keep one busy 24 hrs. per day now.

It is truly a scary time for the children in this nation. I do not recall _anything_ even remotely like this when I was in school (I graduated HS in 1990).

If operatives were to have successfully smuggled radiological materials into the United States using the border with Mexico, the most appropriate time would have been prior to 9/11, as Mir suggested.

IMHO border security was not that much "enhanced" after 9/11 to prevent additional radiological parts and materials from being secretly shipped into this country via either our southern or northern borders. If deported people are able to return time and again, "security" is moot (not to mention several border patrol agents "on the take" per recent news articles).

Vegetation along US-Canadian border

Snip: The United States wants to better secure its border with Canada, but it might have trouble finding it in some areas, an official with the agency that maintains the border said. The U.S. and Canada have fallen so far behind on basic maintenance of their shared border that law enforcement officials might have to search through overgrown vegetation for markers in some places, the official said.

"If you can’t find it, then you can’t secure it," said Dennis Schornack, the U.S. commissioner of the International Boundary Commission, the intergovernmental agency responsible for maintaining the U.S.-Canada border.
