The United States and its allies will fail in the so-called "war on terror" without the support of Pakistan and its intelligence service, Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf said Saturday, September 30.
"You will be brought down to your knees if Pakistan doesn't co-operate with you. That is all that I would like to say. Pakistan is the main ally. If we were not with you, you would not manage anything. Let that be clear," he said.
"And if the ISI (Inter Services Intelligence) is not with you, you will fail. Let that be very clear also. Remember my words: if the ISI is not with you and Pakistan is not with you will lose in Afghanistan."
Musharraf recorded the interview after talks with British Prime Minister Tony Blair in London on Thursday, September 28.
In a collection of memoirs entitled "In the Line of Fire," Musharraf further said that US intelligence has paid Pakistan millions of dollars for handing over Al-Qaeda suspects it has captured.
"We have captured 689 and handed over 369 to the United States. We have earned bounties totalling millions of dollars," Musharraf says in his book, which was released on Monday.
"Those who habitually accuse us of 'not doing enough' in the war on terror should simply ask the CIA how much prize money it has paid to the government of Pakistan," he says, without specifying where the money came from.

They've only tried about 6 times or so.
Wait. Whattya MEAN "wait and see"?
I just RIGHT!
Ha, ha
List 'em, por favor.
This Pakistani dictator is playing Bush for a fool. After the 911 attack he played wargames to determine whether he could stand against us. He wisely thought that that would be suicidal and decided to pretend to be a great ally while at the same time refusing to take action against the radical islamics in his country. He has thwarted every effort to kill or capture Osama Bin Ladin and continues to this day to aid the Taliban and Al Qaeda. I believe the so called assassination attempts against him in Pakistan are manufactured. He is playing the US like a fiddle. He will continue his duplicity as long as we allow him to do so.
Considering too many of the responses I have read up to this point, we are polagued with a vast number of those not-so-smart people right here.
God help us.
Spell check inserted that "O" into plagued. Everybody knows I am smarter than that. Don'tcha! don'tcha!
I love the discussions here on FR. I learn much.
Well, I thought that was a new wickiwacki word. Sounds neat, too.
Sorry, forgot to cut off the italicks
Musharraff seems to have a bug stuck up his butt these days... something (we probably don't know about) must have really ticked him off or scared him
LOL! A newly invented word, in search of a definition. Wonder if somewhere out there on the net there is a list of definitions in search of a word?
Wouldn't it be great if politics could be left out of all the various "moves" by EVERYone, and the good of the people would be everyone's driving force?
It sickens me, but it's the nature of the beast...I realize that too.
Here's a hypothetical....
What's happens to the lawless lands of Pakistan if Bin Ladin lets loose a dirty nuke in NYC?
Can we get Special Forces into Pakistan now?
I don't know but you should definitely find a definition
Okay, I'm working on it.
Umm,consider this scenario
.An all out conventional war which starts on the pre-text of grave terrorist attacks on India-both sides slug it out for about 15 days & If India plays its cards right-it will have gained territory in Kashmir,Sindh & portions of the Punjab,in adddition to control of Pakistan's SeaLanes. Before such a war goes nuclear Beijing will mobilise it's troops on India's borders to upset India's applecart.Even if China doesn't go to war with INdia,it will not allow Pakistan to sink without a fight. If it means keeping the regime alive in Islamabad by using its diplomatic clout,so be it.Pakistan has been China's insurance policy for nearly 50 years now against India.
In the event of a seminal clash with Pakistan,India will emerge stronger in the long-term,but it would be wounded in the short-term.Trust Beijing to use the likes of Bangladesh or Myanmaar to rub salt.
Err,the last time elections were held to Pakistan's parliament in 2002,Musharraf backed the very Islamist parties you fear so as to nullify the alliance between the established democratic parties. It's a big ruse to imagine that these Islamic parties are all powerful -they can not lift a finger without the military allowing it-they raised them afterall.
& Oh,for the nth time, the ISI is not independent of the Pakistani miilitary apparatus. The view that they are a shady, all powerful group of thugs suits the generals-who can look clean.
I think it's the difference between having about half the country want to assassinate you and having the entire country want to assassinate you.
There could be some practical difference, because in the latter case, who would be left to guard him?
