Schwarzenegger Surging Ahead as Vote Nears
LAT ^ | Oct. 1, 2006 | Michael Finnegan,

The governor takes a commanding lead, with many Democrats and independents saying they support him. A key issue is leadership skill.

Just over five weeks before election day, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger holds a commanding lead over his Democratic challenger, state Treasurer Phil Angelides, who has built scant support beyond a core base of liberals, according to a new Los Angeles Times Poll.

If the Nov. 7 election were held today, likely voters would favor the Republican governor over Angelides 50% to 33%.

The survey found an abundance of grim signs for Angelides, including a failure to match Schwarzenegger's success in rallying voters of his own party strongly behind his candidacy. Just 61% of Democrats support Angelides, while 88% of Republicans favor Schwarzenegger. And independents, a crucial swing vote, support Schwarzenegger over Angelides 49% to 31%.

he cut the vehicle registration tax (when first elected) and no new taxes have been implemented.

The ignorance is so fundamental it is sublime.

By invalidating an executive order to abolish a General Fund subsidy of the VLF, Schwarzenegger was forced to circumvent constitutional protections in order to borrow the money to make up the $4B, annual shortfall.

The borrowing is costing the California taxpayers almost $30B over the next 12 years. That's $30B, with a B, in real money, owed to the Austrian's large campaign contributors from the New York area. The $15B to support the subsidy, has now wiped out any gain from the subsidy (just trading dollars for dollars) and the $15B in interest, increases California taxes by $1B a year. Net loss of $15B to California's tax payers.

Notice what? That Arnold is a DIRC? That's evident even to a child. Given the tilt of this state, under either man, we're going to see scant prospect of a conservative resurgence for the forseeable future. But under Arnold, its going to be more complicated since it will be difficult for the CAGOP to dissent as easily from the liberal bipartisan consensus as they would if there was a Democrat in office. This may be a victory Arnold's cheerleaders such as yourself will come to regret.

The joke is those savings are going to be wiped out by the hidden tax increases and utility rate hikes embodied in the Green legislation just signed by Arnold. So folks had better enjoy the reduction in the car tax while it lasts. The loss is being made good elsewhere.

Since when is supporting a dual citizen like Schwartzenegger for higher office considered an unspeakable crime,

That depends on party registration and political philosophy. For Democrats and liberals it probably isn't.

Until 1984, anyone holding dual citizenship could not run for Governor of California. That was just 20 years ago.

Sworn, divided political allegiance was felt intolerable by our founding fathers and that abomination is near the top of my list of unspeakable crimes for a political party to commit. Especially a party which has traditionally prided itself in upholding original intent and founding principles. The only justifiable desertion by the GOP, in the mid 19th century, that I can recall, was the 3/5s rule.

See #101 above.

The VLF has actually gone up by 25% as a result of the Austrian's stunt on his first day in office. Before he signed the executive order, VLF fees were up $4B annually from the same period a year earlier. After Schwarzenegger reinstated the General Fund subsidy, cumulative VLF fees were back to pre-September 2003 levels. After Prop 58 was approved, the cumulative cost to the taxpayers went back up to the Davis level. When the interest became due on the Prop 58 bond last year, the cumulative cost of VLF fees to the tax payers went up another $1B annually.

That a 25% increase from August 2003 to July 2005.

The reduction has been gone for almost 2 years and the increase was instituted over a year ago.

Schwarzenegger vetoes universal health care bill

By STEVE LAWRENCE, Associated Press Writer

Friday, September 22, 2006

(09-22) 16:44 PDT SACRAMENTO, (AP) --

Saying he opposes government-run health care, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger followed through Friday on his promise to veto a Democratic bill that would have set up a universal health care system covering all Californians.

All that Arnold's governorship has done is slow the swirl in the toilet. California is headed in the same direction under Arnold as it would be under Davis, Bustamante, or Angelides - - just slower. The point is, California's situation is not improving.

California is like the hopeless, urine-soaked alcoholic who must first "hit bottom" before recovery can truly begin. Maybe it would be better for the state to "hit bottom" sooner rather than later. The toilet swirl under Arnold is excruciatingly slow, but make no mistake - - the direction is exactly the same. Down the toilet.

I'm not entirely sure the CAGOP *has* "party resources."

Poochigian and Mountjoy are lost causes so we can be sure the CAGOP will ignore those races. Parish is probably a lost cause too. McClintock is literally neck-and-neck and there are a couple others who might stand a chance.

Consider a donation to McClintock to help him get over the top.

You realize that is Arnold wins, this is IT, he's DONE in 2010, right? A win for Arnold is a win with 'independents' because they'll see the GOP aren't just Fred Phelps or soulless, warmongering neocons.

There is less than nothing to be gained for the CAGOP from an Angelides victory.

Until 1984, anyone holding dual citizenship could not run for Governor of California.

That's nonsense. Historically the state of California has always had a low eligibility threshold with regard to both US citizenship and State residency. That's because the most of the original inhabitants favoring statehood were Mexican (or Californios as they preferred to be called), and assorted white settlers from all over the United States and Europe.

Since you're such a big fan of original intent, here is the section of the 1849 California State Constitution that deals with citizenship and residency

"Sec. 3: No person shall be eligible to the office of the Governor, (except at the first election) who has not been a citizen of the United States and a resident of this State two years next preceding the election, and attained the age of twenty-five years at the time of said election."

Not a word about barring those holding dual citizenship and for a very good reason.

Good. Some effort is exhibited. But more homework is required.

Here's a clue:

From 1850 to 1984, persons holding foreign citizenship were not elgible to become Governor in California.

What nonsensical thinking! If only the world was so simple. It's not.

California would have borrowed and spent that $4 Billion whether Arnold got rid of the car tax increase or not. That's what they do in Sacramento: spend.

By keeping his campaign promise to roll back the car tax increase, Arnold at least channeled that $4 Billion back to taxpayers.

The other option was simply letting the $4 Billion go to whatever wasteful spending Sacramento would have come up with.

It's not as though the children in Sacramento are suddenly going to cut spending and act like adults, after all. That's not an option.

You're just b!tc#ing at Arnold. You're an unappeasable who has no realistic view of the world; you're colored by an idealism that isn't obtainable in California.

Which is to say, you're going to lead a very frustrated life. Having unrealistic expectations is a sure ticket to being miserable.
