The Sons of Confederate Veterans are demanding that Sen. George Allen apologize for apologizing.
Allen has tried to mend fences with minorities over his use of the word "macaca," a racially-charged word, in part by saying he has regretted his infatuation with the Confederate flag.
That touched off an angry response Thursday from two leaders of the 4,000-member Confederate group, who said Allen has turned his back on them.
"We feel he's using our flag to wipe the muck from his shoes that he's now stepped in," said Frank Earnest of Virginia Beach, state division commander of the group.

That being said, I don't get the infatuation with running this guy for President when he's having trouble winning his own heavily-Republican state. The thought of running Allen nationwide gives me Bob Dole vibes. If freepers were smart they'd support re-electing Allen to the Senate and running a POPULAR, CONSERVATIVE, SWING-STATE GOVERNOR for President.
Yeah I know - he's a Democrat.
But I had hopes of Allen running well for President in 2008 but that looks gone now.
George Allen is quickly eclipsing Howard Dean for "stupidest things a politician can say". But at least he has brought the word macaca into the public lexicon.
I think the only time I have heard that is when Ace Ventura Pet Detective said it.
Gee, Webb's campaign guru "Mudflap" Saunder is a member of the Sons of Confederate Vets. Could THAT have anything to do with this, hmmmm?
thanks for the ping Moose4
Hope that Sen Webb will make the Sons of Confederate Vets happy.
I am honored to be a long standing member of the SCV and UCV. However, the job of the SCV should be to honor those that passed and be the caretakers of the history and items that our ancestors left. Entering into the fray of racial or Civil War politics is a no win situation for Allen or the SCV. The SCV members of Virginia are only opening themselves up to ridicule and unwarranted scrutiny. This bonehead move by the SCV in Virginia will ultimately backfire. No one said that many of the members of the SCV were logical and politically savvy.
"Allen sounds more and more like a looseer, even if he wins.
I'm depressed."
This national attack by the media and the left was about knocking him out of the presidential race on 08, it looks like they succeeded.
Neither Allen or Webb needs them.
You could be right, but my worry is that if no SCV votes for him, that could be a percent of the votes he needs. They just the plablicity of this story could switch some independents who respect the group. I don't like this at all. I thought after TO was hospitalized and Allen fell out of the spotlight, this was going to be over and Allen would revive his campaign. Now I am wanting to move to Virginia today so I can vote. Although, I have to worry about Senator Santorum in Pennsylvania too...this is not quite a nightmare, but not a good position to be in right now.
Gotta say it. That takes some doin'.
It's not an actual racial slur. I'm convinced of it now. It's not even an obscure one in French Algeria.
And I don't know why people are worried. This is going to benefit Allen.
There are some people who will just believe it. There are black people who just have to hear the whiff that somebody is a racist and they'll believe it. It doesn't matter how much of a lie it is. And why not? Better than taking the chance, right?
It's simply impossible to win against this. You know, there are some who said that media bias helps Republicans because it strengthens them, but when it comes to this kind of disgusting onslaught, media bias does work.
IOW, bigots come in all colors. If you are looking for justification for your ingrained prejudices, you'll find them every time, even if you have to manufacture them from shreds, innuendo, gossip and nonsense words.
No, there are plenty of people of any stripe who will believe things. For example, Christians who will believe allegations of infidelity without evidence.
I suspect that some on this thread are as conservative and Republican as.. well as Jim Webb. In other words, NADA.
It was in today's Washington Post.
Admittedly, that doesn't preclude it being a joke....
