CAIRO, Egypt - The new leader of al-Qaida in Iraq said in an audio message posted on a Web site Thursday that more than 4,000 foreign insurgent fighters have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. It was believed to be the first major statement from insurgents in Iraq about their losses.

"The blood has been spilled in Iraq of more than 4,000 foreigners who came to fight," said the man, who identified himself as Abu Hamza al-Muhajir - also known as Abu Ayyub al-Masri - the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq. The voice could not be independently identified.

What about in 2004 when Kerry and his kids were trying to talk tough, they'd say they would "hunt down and kill" (Those four words were said by every Kerry shill out there) the terrorists wherever they were.

But just not Iraq.

So if I understood that right, he would pull our troops out of Iraq, but he would then send them anywhere else in the world to "hunt down and kill" terrorists.

Hey lurch.....THEY'RE IN IRAQ YA BIG DOPE!!!

"The new leader of al-Qaida in Iraq said in an audio message posted on a Web site Thursday that more than 4,000 foreign insurgent fighters have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003."

The above keyword "foreign" will be missed by far too many people who read this article and thread.

The "foreign" insurgent fighters in Iraq comprise only 2% of the insurgency, based upon the number of domestic versus foreign insurgents that we've captured, wounded, and killed with verification so far to date.

That would suggest that we've killed 200,000 insurgents in Iraq to date, 4,000 foreign fighters and 196,000 domestic insurgents.

Likewise, it is worth remembering that wounded soldiers often outnumber those killed by anywhere from 2 to 1 (for really bad medvac) up to 8 to 1 (for really good body armor and medical care saving lives).

This would imply an additional 400,000 wounded insurgent casualties in Iraq since 2003.

And this is what it takes. This will herald cultural change. Just as France's 67% battlefield casualty rate in the First World War effectively ended their warrior culture, so too will years of these sorts of losses in Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya, Philippines, Horn of Africa, and places unmentioned do to the feeble warrior culture of 50 million male followers of the most radical versions of Islam.

If al Qaeda says 4,000, the real number is probably many times that number.

I take the numbers with a grain of salt. It could be a lot higher or it could be a lot lower. What is important are the very many villages, towns, cities in al Anbar, Bibil and other provinces that are now mostly or totally rid of the al Qaeda influence.
Just as a polite reminder to many of us that do not have the time to follow this stuff closely, we should remember there are groups, both Sunni and Shia that work independently of AQIR, or only participate on the fly as some particular tasked to be done matches their generic agenda.
Groups like the radical Sunni Ansar al Islam, Jaish Muhammad, and Anar al Sunnah, have not been an official part of AQIR. Also the tens of thousands of Baathist party members and ex Saddam military are just as guilty of attacking, arranging for common criminals and normally non participants in the insurgency to plant EID's, drive suicide car bombs (threaten death of family members if the person does not do it) etc., all continue to contribute to this insurgency.
So from my view point, this news is nice to hear, and probably is basically accurate, but only constitutes a portion of all the ali baba that now pop up daisies
And heaven only knows how many of all these mixes now sit in prisions and special retaining camps and get interrogated.

Excellent news, but even more excellent news is that Arabs always lie about their losses so make the number at least 5 times more, i.e. 20,000 dead foreign terrorists.

Which means they really have lost 10,000 or more.

That number is low. I'd wager it's 5-10 times that number in reality.

Sorry but there is NO beneftit for them to exaggerate their losses and plenty of reason for them to play down their losses.

I'm with ya. As you where composing your posts, I in much less detail commented along the same lines in post #67.

So many are now dead that have nothing to do with AQIR. And with the now operational border patrol system in place, foreigner cannot gain access to Iraq as easily in times past.
As the Iraqi forces continue to gain in numbers and effeciency, and the national dialog for a unity reconcillation, etc., continue to gain steam, the insurgency is doomed.
The insurgency is being shut down more effectively then most of the world reporting has eluded to.

What do you call 4000 dead insurgents/terrorists?
A good start.

If you're AP or Reuters. You call it 4000 civilian casualties
