Mitt Romney lies about abortion
Red State ^

Posted on 09/27/2006 11:07:20 AM PDT by SDGOP

In his latest interview with RedState, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney responds to a question about his abortion position by saying that he's never adopted the label "pro-choice."

That's all well and good. Mitt Romney wants to be called pro-life. I'd like to be the King of all Londinium and wear a shiny hat.

But let's not kid ourselves: there is no substantive difference between the position labeled "pro-choice," declaring your support for "the right to choose." And that is something that Mitt Romney has done repeatedly over the course of his political career. To say otherwise is to tell a lie.

What I heard there was an option that the owner could chose opt out the health plan and would only be charged a small penalty. I thought that was a very cleaver option!

Romney is for CLOSING the BORDERS and NO AMNESTY!

Yes, as a matter of fact i can:

HEADLINE: Strategies shaped an epic race;
A look behind Kennedy-Romney;

SPECIAL REPORT / INSIDE THE KENNEDY-ROMNEY RACE / ELECTION 94
In a state where only 13 percent of the electorate is Republican, Romney's strategists wanted to avoid a campaign along party lines. Like Bill Weld in 1990, they believed, Romney needed to appeal to independents with a combination of fiscal conservatism and social liberalism.

....
Romney also sought to appeal to working women by asking Kennedy about the "glass ceiling" facing them. But the question allowed Kennedy to tout his own credentials on women's rights. "That question was like asking Babe Ruth how to hit a ball," said Shrum.
______________
HEADLINE: ELECTION GUIDE; Romney gives Kennedy fight of his life

Romney has sought to cast himself in the mold of Gov. William F. Weld: conservative on fiscal matters and more moderate on social issues such as abortion and gay rights.

_____

HEADLINE: Romney makes TV appeal;
While one questioner was a former aide to state Democratic party chairwoman Joan Menard, another was Abner Mason, a leader in the Log Cabin Club, a gay Republican group. He asked Romney to explain his views on abortion and gay rights. The local Log Cabin group has already endorsed Romney - and Mason has personally pitched that endorsement to reporters.

__________

HEADLINE: Senator and his challenger both exploit Romney remark;

Kennedy attacked Romney for what he characterized as flip-flops on the minimum wage, family leave and education funding, suggesting that his opponent was "a little Halloween ghost . . . he's not there sometimes, and then he's there."

_____

HEADLINE: Once Again, Kennedy's the One to Beat;

After Two Debates, GOP's Romney Is Left Playing Catch-Up

Last night was not nearly as one-sided, but a string of questions from obvious Kennedy sympathizers on college-student loans, preschool programs, affordable housing and other made-to-order topics for the senator kept Romney in a me-too posture through much of the hour. The Boston Globe's Martin F. Nolan wrote today that it was "less a debate than an ambush" of the Republican.

On conservative talk shows, Romney was being derided today for "throwing the fight," by blurring his differences with the Democrat. Eager to show that he is a moderate independent and no ideologue, Romney stressed his support for universal health insurance and abortion rights, criticized the Republican "Contract With America" promoted by the party's congressional leaders and, at Faneuil Hall, was more outspoken than Kennedy in arguing that the Boy Scouts should not exclude homosexual youths.

Mitt Romney, the Republican candidate challenging Senator Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, was asked in one of their debates what his position was on health care.

"I want universal coverage," he replied. And, he said, Americans should be able to move without losing their insurance and should not be excluded because of pre-existing medical conditions.

_____
HEADLINE: ANALYSIS; GOP contender puts fire back in campaign

Earlier, when challenged by a panelist whether he would side with Republican filibuster attempts, Romney deftly replied he was not a "party politician" - a clear appeal to independent voters.

"I am not going to Washington to toe the line," Romney said.

_____

HEADLINE: Conservative group yanks its support for Mitt

A national conservative group yesterday attacked Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mitt Romney for espousing a "left-wing agenda" and urged its followers not to support his candidacy.

The group said Romney's nationally televised debate performance against Sen. Edward M. Kennedy showed he is "anti-family" and running away from conservative Republican themes.

The GOP candidate warmly praised President Clinton. "I think the president does a lot of things that make a lot of sense," he said. "I support him in many ways. I hope he gets changed, but I'll still support him while he is there for the next two years."

....

Romney adviser Charles Manning last night dismissed Bozell's group as a right-wing organization that has not been involved in Romney's campaign.

....

He said he now regrets asking his group members to contribute to Romney because the debate "demonstrated very clearly that (Romney) has more in common with liberal Democrats than he does with conservatives."

....

Other conservative leaders in Washington also were reportedly upset with Romney for voicing support on Tuesday night for gay rights, abortion rights and forcing employers to release information on their hiring record of women and minorities.

"Any man who runs on quotas for women is not one of us," Bozell said

....

Romney objected to the characterizations, saying: "I was an independent during the time of Reagan-Bush. I'm not trying to return to Reagan-Bush."

Romney has sought throughout the campaign to portray himself as a "Bill Weld Republican" who is is liberal on social issues and conservative on fiscal matters.

___________
____________
_____

That's just barely scratching the surface, the guy is a complete rino. THat's just his 1994 campaign but the articles go on and on and on. Once people see romney's real record, he will go down in flames.

Romney does not have the same stance, as we clearly detailed here Reagan signed a bill beleiving that almost all of us would sign, abortion in case of the big three: rape, incest, mothers health. Problem was the helath exception was exploited as we all know it was today, reagan didn't see this and within a year of signing it regretted it. Romney on the otherhand changed his position only as the republican nomination came about.

Reagan was NEVER pro abort, he just signed a bill that almost all of us hope to fight for.

HEADLINE: BAY STATE ENACTS ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN

BODY:
Governor Mitt Romney yesterday signed into law a permanent ban on deadly assault weapons, such as the AK-47 and Uzi, made or sold in Massachusetts. The current state ban, passed in 1998, is tied to a federal law that is set to expire Sept. 13 unless Congress reauthorizes it. President Bush has signaled that he would sign a bill extending the ban, but state officials had worried that Congress might not approve a new bill before the expiration. Activists say Massachusetts is the first state to extend the ban. During a bill-signing news conference, John Rosenthal, cofounder and chairman of Stop Handgun Violence, Rosenthal called on other states to pass similar measures. If the federal ban expires, people will be able to purchase and sell assault weapons in other states and the weapons may end up in Massachusetts, he said.

"What I heard there was an option that the owner could chose opt out

"

Like a Massachusetts Dhimmi tax? To grow over time?
This is socialized medicine in a state which puts ILLEGAL ALIENS ahead of veterans
and ahead of citizens, and then has the audacity to invite the ILLEGAL ALIENS in
using protective zones like Cambridge. In Wayland (and perhaps elsewhere), the ILLEGAL ALIENS
even get to vote. Ain't that special?

Furthermore, the Mass citizens voted for a tax refund which has not been granted
showing yet more abdication by Romney. Outside of the field of camera for TV, he is a wus.

I don't appear to be an allen supporter, i AM one. Theres no crime in pointing out the other candidates deficiencies, everybody does it. I do acknowledge their strengths though. I have always stated that Romney is my number two pick, he is infinitely better than Rudy and a piece of dog excrement is better than Mccain. I also do support them when there under attack by leftists or praise them when they do good. I.e. tar baby with romney and the hit piece book on rudy. Although, i don't think i will ever defend mccain.

Despite your confabulation and disingenuity, I did not blame the Big Dig incompetence on Romney but pointed out that instead of perpwalking Matt out when he could, he let the perp "gold parachute", so that absence of dignity is solely in your posts.

Your big words are impressive yet your information is not. You are clearly not from Massachusetts and have no knowledge on how things work here.

If you did you would not be blaming Mitt for not "Perp walking Matt" out the door.

You sound like a liberal blaming Bush for high oil prices,it feels good but makes no sense.

Still waiting to hear who you're supporting...

Some of them are politically ignorant, yes - kindly do not quote me out of context, thank you. I live in California where Tom McClintock would be a great governor were it not for the myopic pro-life contingent that demands that abortion be the #1 plank of any political candidate's platform. The result is that we almost never get a pro-life candidate elected to office. If they'd shut their yaps and just let a decent man get elected and THEN carry out a pro-life agenda we might actually get somewhere in this state. But in a state where being called "pro-life" is an epithet these morons are Planned Parenthoods most effective political campaigners. You may not like that, but that's what's called "reality". We need to win some elections before we stand on principle - as Willie Brown once said, "Losers don't write legislation." And he was talking about US.

"Shows that you Romney-haters are getting nervous out there."

I am no hard core supporter of the governor of my state. I do think that he is a whole lot better than any of the real likely alternatives.

Whatever, the BS that is coming out about Romney is striking. There is absolutely NOBODY in this state that seriously believes Romney is pro-choice.

He is getting slammed on FR.com by a lot of people who must have some agenda that involves Mitt not getting the nomination.

For example, I'm sure you know how many people from New England incorrectly think people of the South are ignorant because of their mannerisms.

I'm from Massachusetts. I've been here for 40 years. I voted for Romney for Governor and have been observing him for the last few years.
As I said, just personal opinion. So, no...I have no incidents to share. Critical or otherwise.

Although I would have been as impressed as hell if he'd come out on one side or the other of the abortion issue and told people to take it or leave it. That would have taken some backbone.

Dear Radix,

"There is absolutely NOBODY in this state that seriously believes Romney is pro-choice."

Then why did he say things like this:

"I believe that abortion should be safe and legal in this country. I have since the time when my Mom took that position when she ran in 1970 as a U.S. Senate candidate. I believe that since Roe v. Wade has been the law for 20 years that we should sustain and support it, and I sustain and support that law and the right of a woman to make that choice."

-Mitt Romney in a 1994 Senatorial debate

"I respect and will fully protect a woman's right to choose. That choice is a deeply personal one, and the women of our state should make it based on their beliefs, not mine and not the government's."

-Mitt Romney in a 2002 GOP acceptance speech

However you view it, the nominations were a huge success by Republicans in the Senate, and being the leader of them, Frist deserves some credit.

That said, Delay was much better at getting things done, and standing up to everyone (including Bush at times).

Well it seems Mass has been like that for decades, way before Romney step in and I imagine it is very entrench with backroom crowies.

It is a miracle that Romney could do the things he was able to do!

Big words? We call that: English.
The fact is that your posts have no information
other than indicating your unsubstantive fondness for Romney.

Then he won't vote for him twice. ;-)

And yes, you're right, it is two years.
