HARDY, Va. - If Republicans decide to replicate the style and substance of President Bush when nominating a potential successor in 2008, they will likely choose another conservative named George.
George Allen, that is, the junior senator from Virginia, who agrees with Bush on most major issues. On their few points of disagreement, such as immigration and campaign finance, Allen sides with the more conservative Republicans who will dominate primary election voting.
I like him very much I consider him a friend, Allen says of Bush in an interview with The Examiner. And I know a lot of people like to criticize him. We even have Republicans distancing themselves from him because his approval ratings are in the 30s.

True enough. Trent Lott gets kicked from his leadership slot because of a remark at a birthday party. Livingston resigns because of an extramarital affair. In contrast, the Dems have a former member of the KKK who not too long ago used the N word in a television interview. Hillary calls them "Jew bastards" and her run for the presidency is not tarnished in the slighest. Al Sharpton was a candidate for the nomination despite his race baiting, which resulted in seveal deaths and a damaged reputations. Barney Frank has a male prostitution ring run out of his apartment. Ted Kennedy's negligence causes the death of one of his staffers and gets off scot free. I could go on and on.
We have endured this double standard long enough. A relatively harmless remark by Allen now, according to many Reps, rules out his chances for the Presidency. The Dems pile on about his alleged use of the N word as a college student, which Allen strenuously denies. His Jewish grandfather, unlike Albright's and Wesley Clark' s Jewish roots, becomes a cause celebre. We are our own worst enemy.
I truly believe anyone who votes party affiliation alone to be a fool! I'm voting for Webb because I believe him to be the better candidate, and one who will better represent me by not ignoring my letters (as Allen has done). I told you whom I plan to vote for in the presidential race...In retrospect I suppose I should have said I'm voting against the Democratic challenger as he/she is certain to be as extremely left-leaning as you are on the opposite spectrum.
"The long knives are out for Allen, because he represents the biggest threat in a generation to Democrats. "
He's also a threat to Rinos. I suspect a lot of the anti-Allen posters here are plants from the Giulani and McCain campaigns. Not everybody, but enough of these posters show up on every thread within the first few posts to declare Allen's chances nil, that you wouldn't be surprised if they were trying to kill his chances. It isn't like FreeRepublic hasn't been used and abused before, it's a pretty central clearing house. Heaven knows the Buchanan troops were nasty, as were the McCainiacs.
Pretty much like you on the Romney thread?
SZ
I like George Allen, he would make a fine President.
(a) Have you written to Webb? What does he say?
(b) Who the hell do you think you are?
(c) Has it ever occured to you that Allen's staff ignores your pissant little missives for the same reason that Jessica Simpson does?
This coming from a guy who likes McCain because of the unConstitutional Campaign Finance Reform Bill. Pathetic.
Here's a guy that's admits he's voting for a democrat senatorial candidate in 2006..... AND is a fan of John McCain. How long are you going to allow him to soil your living room rug?
Webb is a racist bastard.
You really should at least put quotation marks when quoting someone. You wouldn't want folks to think you are voting for a rat, would you?
I'm pissed at meandog. What an idiot.
He's a democrat......same thing.
Nah. You're just sore at George Allen for not answering your mail.
Guess he ignores whiners.
Your comparison is more than outlandish, it shows you know nothing about Newt, or about Gore.
I would hope they aren't finished yet. Romney has some very good qualities (especially his handling of the former Iranian President).
WEll my reference was to the list someone posted, i didn't see romney's name on there. It had Allen, Mccain, Rudy, and Huckabee. Huckabee has no shot of the nomination. We all have our preferences, but i think most honest objective observers can say that the nomination comes down to Mccain, Rudy, Allen, and Romney. (Although if you go over to redstate, everyone over there has never thought of allen as a serious contender).
kabar - Don't subscribe to the Wash Post - just read it on-line. I don't want to give them my money, but I want to know what they are up to.
Agreed on the George Allen hit job though - it is so blatant but not unexpected. Allen needs to come out with both barrels blasting on the whole N-word story - he can't sit back and hope it goes away.
