Last week's announcement that the World Health Organization lifted its nearly 30-year ban on the insecticide DDT is perhaps the most promising development in global public health since well, 1943 when DDT was first used to combat insect-borne disease like typhus and malaria. Overlooked in all the hoopla over the announcement is the terrible toll in human lives (tens of millions dead, mostly pregnant women and children under age 5), illness (billions sickened) and poverty (more than $1 trillion in lost GDP in sub-Saharan Africa alone) caused by the tragic, decades-long ban.

About friggin time!
HERE HERE!
Tree huggers lied, tens of millions died!
More like mosquito huggers.
Maybe we should make them live according to their principles and go to Africa without any nasty chemicals or even flyswatters.
I praise God that this terrible ban has been lifted - millions have died needlessly for the sake of well-meaning but misguided environmental policies.
I pray that the relief of South America, Africa, and India and other nations will be immediate...
Well, if their superstart, Osama bin Laden died of Typhus, then it's time the UN did something about it!
"Except for Rachel Carson (who died in 1964), all the groups and individuals above mentioned also promote global warming alarmism. If they and others could be so wrong about DDT, why should we trust them now? Should we really put the global economy and the welfare of billions at risk based on their track record?"
Good Article!
It's only been banned since the late 70's? Seems like it's been a longer time than that.
See Silent Spring at 40 Rachel Carsons classic is not aging well., especially the last 2 paragraphs.
DOES THAT MEAN u.s. RESIDENTS CAN NOW PURCHASE DDT?
Probably not. We can't even buy Diazanon anymore.
And that Ruckelshaus jackass is still alive and well. Talk about blood on your hands.
Ann Coulter mentions the DDT ban and Carson in her latest book.
I was on the phone with a college "cooperative extension" which is a group of enviromental wackos giving people advice on all things nature. I described a weed I am allergic too and asked if I could buy something powerful to kill the weeds. She said something like this and that is banned because of the danger, and blah blah, blah. I said fine, I'll dump a few gallons of gasoline on them and that should kill them - she almost fainted.
I have the book! Loved it....lol
Yup! You do what ya gotta do.
Yes, my father told it to her face. My Dad was at the top of his field in Industrial Medicine and Toxicology. He said and I quote "Do you realize that you will be responsible for countless deaths because of this ban?" He said that she turned white as a ghost when confronted by him. My dad is now passed away but he would feel very good about this DDT ban being lifted. I still have some DDT that he saved in original packaging.
WOW!
You should send some to Joni Mitchell.
