A French intelligence report made public yesterday raised the tantalizing possibility that Osama bin Laden may have died from typhoid fever. The report - delivered to the highest officials in France, including President Jacques Chirac - said Saudi officials, citing "a usually reliable source," believe the al Qaeda kingpin died Aug. 23 from the waterborne illness in an isolated part of Pakistan.
"The elements of the story collected by the Saudis, from what they found in Pakistan on Aug. 23, 2006, indicate that the chief of al Qaeda has been a victim of a very strong case of typhoid fever that involved a partial paralysis of his lower limbs," said the report published in the regional French newspaper L'Est Republicain.
The intelligence report said the Saudis had caught wind of bin Laden's supposed death on Sept. 4, but were trying to collect more information - specifically about where he was buried - before making any announcement.
The report was circulated to the highest-ranking officials in France two days ago to Chirac, Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin and the country's interior and defense ministers.
Chirac confirmed the report's existence, and expressed astonishment that it had leaked out. The French Defense Ministry promised an investigation.
"I was rather surprised to see a confidential note from the [General Directorate for External Security] was published, and I have asked the minister of defense to start an investigation immediately and to reach whatever conclusions are necessary," Chirac said.
He also said, "This information is in no way whatsoever confirmed."
Both CNN and Time magazine's Web site reported that their own Saudi intelligence sources told them there have been credible reports for several weeks that bin Laden

Saudis refute bin Laden report
THE Saudi Government has pulled the rug from under a French newspaper report about the alleged death of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, saying it "has no evidence to support" the contention.
"The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has no evidence to support recent media reports that Osama bin Laden is dead," the Saudi Embassy said in a statement issued in Washington this morning (AEST).
"Information that has been reported otherwise is purely speculative and cannot be independently verified."

Could this be a French attempt to influence American elections by taking away (what the French think) our motivation for war?
In other words a French October surprise?
If Chirac could, would he try to influence American elections?
France is a Muslim state now, so it seems plausible that the Saudi's would let them know so they could plan to fly the French white flag at half-mast.
