Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton made a star turn this morning at former President Bill Clintons conference on global challenges, calling for a concerted attack on the feminization of poverty by destroying cultural, political, and economic barriers that trap women and children in desperate conditions.
Before a standing-room-only audience in a ballroom of the Sheraton hotel in midtown Manhattan, Mrs. Clinton gave opening remarks at the conference session Women and the Power of Economic Opportunity then moderated a panel that included President Bushs former secretary of agriculture and three leaders in the development and anti-poverty fields.
Far too many women are stuck in a cycle of poverty from which there is no escape, Mrs. Clinton said, noting that women in many countries cannot vote, run for office, or secure credit or equity capital to start businesses. How do we help overcome that condition of poverty and dependence?
Her primary role was to moderate the panel discussion, and she kept her opening remarks brief, but her high profile hardly receded. There were particular twitters in the audience when one panelist mentioned a need for more women in high office (although neither Hillary nor 2008 were words that came up).
Panel members said the goals and solutions for aiding women and fighting poverty were fairly obvious. With greater economic strength, women gain greater power to improve conditions for themselves and their families and to press for political reforms in part by seeking elective office, where they can spur new laws and programs in such areas as education and health.
But getting there has been a stubborn problem, Mrs. Clinton and the panel members agreed.
Women do 66 percent of the work in the world, produce 50 percent of the food, but earn 5 percent of income and 1 percent of the property,...

Hillary sounds like a monarch-in-training
Hillary should spend a year in Islam and see if that works for her.
Where was Hillary at for poor women when they were dying in Rwanda and when the Taliban took power?
They can start by putting some ice on it.
Ha!! Feminism created the problem of poverty - contraception and abortion. Nice try, Senator.
In general, aren't most poor women poor because they are single unwed mothers, in other words, unmarried?
Tell those poor women to get married!
Clearly she's okay with "cultural, political, and economic barriers that trap men in desperate conditions."
Didn't you know.....she only cares when it makes her look good
(which is damn near impossible IMHO!)
How many stonings in Iran has Hillary spoken up on.
Hillary was kissy-face with Mrs. Arafat whenever Yassir would visit the White House, and we know how concerned those two were, as they fed their Swiss bank accounts, for their impoverished Pali constituents.
It's about time Hillary came up with a plan. Her husband has had a global plan for women for a long time.
Far too many women are stuck in a cycle of poverty from which there is no escape, Mrs. Clinton said, noting that women in many countries cannot vote, run for office, or secure credit or equity capital to start businesses. How do we help overcome that condition of poverty and dependence?
Well for one, you can fully support the war on terror and George Bush's policy to bring true democracy to the middle east. Start knocking down some of these muslim walls and it can have a profound change for women and girls.
I don't know. Did she?
Are you kidding?
Perhaps she might scale down her global goals and simply start by bringing some basic human rights to all women in Islamic countries. Like no being stoned in stadiums for walking across the street alone or driving a car alone. I am sure she could get that done and out of the way in a week or so and then tackle poverty.
Part of hillary's plan is to legitimize and expand the 'sex-worker' trade, as she adumbrated at the Peking conference some years ago. Oh yes, she was all for prostitution, including child prostitution. But she wouldn't say that here, of course, not when she's running for something.
I live on the West Coast.
I know, that's no excuse for ignorance... :)
