In new ads, ski company says global warming could dry up snow during the next century...
The Aspen Skiing Co. hopes potential customers are ready for a snow job.
On Wednesday, the company unveiled a new advertising campaign for the 2006-07 season that centers around the message that snow and skiing will disappear around 2100 if humans dont take drastic action to slow global warming. Three full-page ads, which show a melting snowflake imposed over Highland Bowl, will run in SKI and Outside magazines in the next few months.
One ad portrays a certificate of death for snow. Another labels snow an endangered species and explains why. The third pretends to be a future definition describing snow when snow is gone.
The company is gambling that it can capture the attention and interest of potential customers through environmental advertisements.
Thats contrary to advice it received five years ago when it paid an outside market research company to help it determine its brand strategy.
That July 2001 study by a firm called the Z Group concluded that environmental issues were neither highly important nor motivating for our three target segments.
It advised company officials to focus on other issues that were more capable of selling lift tickets.
That is not to suggest that Aspen/Snowmass should reduce its commitment to environmental responsibility, but rather simply to recognize that its value to the company does not lie in its marketing contribution, the study said.
Company officials insisted Wednesday that times have changed.

Never ?
" When does the Aspen airport close to private aircraft ? "
Good! Telluride and Snowmass will appreciate the extra business.
Some people should wear more clothes.
Not just skiing but always...
I agree.
" I will bet $10 that none of todays Aspen's billionaires will be skiing in 2100. "
Looks like it's already tumbled down the hill.
Global warming: Where science meets politics...and where science losses.
Aspen has been too expensive compared to its North American Competitors for >20 years.
I betting that a Moonlight Basin season ticket will be a good deal again this year.
I really want to get down to Moonlight Basin and give it a try.
I'm in Missoula so I ski at Snow Bowl, Lost Trail, Discovery Basin and Big Mountain. All of which I can drive to in the morning.
I stopped getting season passes as I like to mix it up at different ski areas.
Needs repeating :
" Global warming: Where science meets politics...and where science losses. "
Don't tell Algore or he will be really upset.
Evidently you're not a skier.
The CEO and owners of the ASC must like to be " un-crowded by design. "
A winter storm warning is in effect until 6 a.m. Saturday for Boulder, Clear Creek, Gilpin, Grand, Jackson, Larimer, Park and Summit Counties.
12 to 18 inches of new snow is possible in the area with drifting due to northwesterly winds.
Temperatures in the 20's tonight.
