WASHINGTON Conservative activists are heaping criticism on Sen. John McCain for fighting President Bush over proposed rules for the interrogation of terrorism suspects, a dispute that has reopened long-standing divisions between the maverick Republican lawmaker and his party's establishment.
The attack from the right, which coalesced over the weekend, could undercut McCain's effort to woo Bush backers and other party regulars for an anticipated 2008 presidential bid. His position on terrorism prisoners has fueled critics' skepticism about McCain's conservative credentials.
"This very definitely is going to put a chilling effect on the tremendous strides he has made in the conservative evangelical community," said the Rev. Louis P. Sheldon, chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition, one of several conservative activists who support Bush's proposal on interrogation techniques.
Even as conservative leaders berated McCain for refusing to yield to Bush, the high-profile battle could burnish the Arizonan's credentials among admirers who have been concerned about his moves to court the GOP establishment.

Had he lost any due to incompetence he would have lost his wings.
His father was an Admiral, that is why he did not loose his wings.
He broke like everyone else under extreme torture.
four days after being shot down, McCain called for a North Vietnamese guard. 4 days.
Aircraft are lost in war.
The other aircraft he lost was not due to enemy fire.
If we assume McCain is NOT stupid, then he already knows this.
Which means his actual strategy is NOT what it seems on the surface.
So... Does McCain intend to run in the Republican primaries, lose, and then join a "National Unity Ticket" with the Dem nominee? Hillary, maybe?
Maybe with special authority given to the VP, making it closer to a dual Presidency?
Could it be?...
I was an Air Force officer, and I agree with you completely.
McCain knows this too. He just chooses to ignore it.
Out of the bunch I mentioned, he would be my choice. If Tancreado can be something besides a "johnny one note" he may also get my vote. But if you are talking about the best all around candidate, Newt is it. I don't understand the vitreol in the Freeper den about Newt. He gave us the conservative victory, the "Contract" was passed in 100 days, it WORKED, and he is right on most if not all of the issues. I love president Bush, but I disagree with his stand on the border. But try to imagine Algore, or Kerry in office today.
Unless something better comes along,( and it looks increasingly doubtful), I'll take Newt. If the Repubs get to squishy,( Frist, Guliani, et al), you will see the return of the 3rd party spoiler.
Newt has Founding Father type qualities and he "get's it". He balanced the budget, not Klintoon, and he impeached the bastid! The Senate is the one that went wobbly. He is an Army brat, so he gets it about the military, and he was a history teacher that knows Real History.
Someone else may catch my eye, but right now, it's Newt and I think more conservatives need to examine just what they find wrong with him. The most I've heard is that he has a queer daughter and hes been married more than once. Well, Gulinai dresses in drag and marches in parades and he's been married more than once, and was living "in sin" while mayor. McCain is working on multiple marriages, and I'm sure others are too. The point is, I don't think McCain being a POW qualifies him to be Commander in Chief. And I don't think Guliani being Mayor of NYC makes him an expert on terror. I look at the whole enchilada and pick from that. There are those that want Frist to fix health care because he's a doctor. He's a nice man, but if he could fix it, he already would have a plan that was so irresistible, it would be law today. I don't want him running the military or Foreign policy just because he was a doctor.
If it's not Newt, who then? I'm open for serious candidates.
Newt's divorce was so ugly that it would be easy to paint him as a horrible person. I doubt Newt could be elected.
Personally, I suspect we will nominate a classic dark horse. I suspect that person will be running against a Hillary/McCain ticket, or a Hillary/Powell ticket.
When he crashed yet another plane, this time into Vietnam, the minute he was found by the Cong, he pulled an "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?" kind of thing. Instead of just supplying them with his name, rank, and serial number, he told then that his father and grandfather were ADMIRALS! And yes, he also spilled his guts some more, not long after that.
Not all POWs are "heroes".
What you mistakenly call "venom", is just a normal reaction to the facts; facts that you apparently don't know.
I used to really LOVE and admire Newtie. I even have an autographed book of his. But long ago, that admiration began to wane and then turn into distaste. In this, I am NOT alone.
Newtie was GREAT as a backbencher. Most of us were more than willing to overlook his, shall we say rather unsavory, private life ( married his high school math teacher and then, divorced her in a shoddy way ), because of his seemingly staunch conservatism and '94 leadership.
Yes, he forced Clinton into the balanced budget; however, he also strapped on kneepads when he and the Toon had that televised love-fest. And then there was the closing down of Congress, which worked to Clinton's advantage. From then one, it was downhill all the way. He caved and kept on caving to Slick. But what can you expect, when Newt is the reverse side of the same coin Clinton is on?
Oh yes, Newt has FF type qualities......he and Ben Franklin , where morality ( lack thereof ) is concerned; not to mention being a lousy husband and father and adulterer.
Jeffersonian UTOPIAN, head in the clouds kind of qualities; especially when Newt was pushing the last Tolfers (sp?) book.
Let's also throw in Burr's backstabbing quality, while we're at it...shall we?
Are you aware of the fact that Newt has been going around praising that IDIOT Bloomberg's insane plan to pay welfare recipients' money, for each completed chore, as a bribe, for feeding their kids, making sure their children go to school, they go to a doctor, etc.?
Stop trying to slam Rudy with that cross dressing canard! He took part in annual SHOWS, where mayors and N.Y.C. lawyers and politicos have been dressing up and putting on skits for many decades years. THIS IS NOTHING NEW! But FR's wee group of foaming at the mouth Giulliani haters have been spamming thread after thread with the same damned pictures, from one or two shows, for months now. Either these posters don't know ( except I and a few others have been telling them where these pictures are from and WHY he was dressed as he was ) or, and this IS the real answer, they know and they just want to trash Rudy. And if you want to talk about divorces and adultery, Newt's are far worse and HIS own doing, unlike Rudy's!
Tancredo is a johnny-one-note. His sycophants are moonbats.
We are two years out of the '08 GOP presidential primary. At this point, prior to the same thing of '00, nobody, NOBODY, was talking about President Bush.
Will a knight in shining armor appear next year, amongst the pack of "I DON'T WANT ANY OF THEMs"? I don't know, but I sure hope so.
McCain's fellow boarders at the HANOI HILTON can't stand him and have LOUDLY come out against him.....long ago.
John F. Kerry has far more Purple Hearts than McCain has. Is Kerry a "HERO" too?
The ONLY tinfoil around here, is the many boxes worth of Reynold's Wrap tightly bound about your head and eyes.
The future will take care of itself in due time.
What is to gain by stirring up crap about this right now?
Nothing now that McCain caved on the Terrorists bill.
Now we know what a McCainiac is.....
Because Rush also said Susan Collins talks like a Miss America contestant- after imitating her:)
Those of us who were on FR six years ago, have known that for a very long time. But yes, that post was a poke in the eye reminder. :-)
There ya go...
The truth gets them every time. : )
That it does.....LOL
Yep, bought and paid for by Al Qaeda, all four of them.
