WASHINGTON — Conservative activists are heaping criticism on Sen. John McCain for fighting President Bush over proposed rules for the interrogation of terrorism suspects, a dispute that has reopened long-standing divisions between the maverick Republican lawmaker and his party's establishment.
The attack from the right, which coalesced over the weekend, could undercut McCain's effort to woo Bush backers and other party regulars for an anticipated 2008 presidential bid. His position on terrorism prisoners has fueled critics' skepticism about McCain's conservative credentials.
"This very definitely is going to put a chilling effect on the tremendous strides he has made in the conservative evangelical community," said the Rev. Louis P. Sheldon, chairman of the Traditional Values Coalition, one of several conservative activists who support Bush's proposal on interrogation techniques.
Even as conservative leaders berated McCain for refusing to yield to Bush, the high-profile battle could burnish the Arizonan's credentials among admirers who have been concerned about his moves to court the GOP establishment.

Note to dream on McCainiancs cheeleaders. Conservatives, not these mythical "Admirers", nominate the 2008 Republican Canidate. For trying to backstab the President and hand control of the Congress over to the Dems this year, McCain and the other RINO stoodtes are politically dead in Republican circles.
That and everything else McCain does to prove he's out of touch with reality and Republican voters.

Not really, he wasn't going to make it anyway. Same with Guliani, Allen and most of the other "mainstreamers". We probably don't even know who it is right now, unless it's Newt. McCain won't make it except with Dems, Guliani won't make it in the South, and the others look too lightweight. If Tancredo has more than one issue, he might have a chance. I just don't see Frist, Huccabee, Pataki, Allen, and Romney as president.
McCain was a POW and John Kerry wore a uniform.
Those two things do not make them qualified to set policy for the rest of us.
Following the logic of the POW defense put forth by the media for McCain we should have a rehabilitated crackhead as the Director of the DEA etc etc
McCain is wrong. I was an Army officer and Geneva conventions do not apply to terrorist.
McCain watched Kerry almost get into the White House by keeping his head so far up his @ss that journalists were unable to get him to explain what he intended to do if he ever pulled his head out.
Obviously, McCain has tried this tactic many times himself because it confuses people when you have to stick your head up your @ss to check on your hidden agenda in private.
Unfortunately, McCain is an unpredictable fool while Kerry is a far more predictable fool!!!
I have never really trusted McCain. He has been a *VIP* for way too long to understand that our elected representatives - serve the people, not themselves.

(donning tinfoil hat) I've heard some speculation amongst dentist friends that it looks like McCain might perhaps have had more surgery. Total speculation - no evidence, but if he's had a recurrence, it's possible he knows 2008 isn't an option under any circumstances. Perhaps this is his final finger to Bush and all Republicans who didn't bow down to him previously.
