If we assume McCain is NOT stupid, then he already knows this.
Which means his actual strategy is NOT what it seems on the surface.
So... Does McCain intend to run in the Republican primaries, lose, and then join a "National Unity Ticket" with the Dem nominee? Hillary, maybe?
Maybe with special authority given to the VP, making it closer to a dual Presidency?

McCain knows this too. He just chooses to ignore it.
Out of the bunch I mentioned, he would be my choice. If Tancreado can be something besides a "johnny one note" he may also get my vote. But if you are talking about the best all around candidate, Newt is it. I don't understand the vitreol in the Freeper den about Newt. He gave us the conservative victory, the "Contract" was passed in 100 days, it WORKED, and he is right on most if not all of the issues. I love president Bush, but I disagree with his stand on the border. But try to imagine Algore, or Kerry in office today.
Unless something better comes along,( and it looks increasingly doubtful), I'll take Newt. If the Repubs get to squishy,( Frist, Guliani, et al), you will see the return of the 3rd party spoiler.
Newt has Founding Father type qualities and he "get's it". He balanced the budget, not Klintoon, and he impeached the bastid! The Senate is the one that went wobbly. He is an Army brat, so he gets it about the military, and he was a history teacher that knows Real History.
Someone else may catch my eye, but right now, it's Newt and I think more conservatives need to examine just what they find wrong with him. The most I've heard is that he has a queer daughter and hes been married more than once. Well, Gulinai dresses in drag and marches in parades and he's been married more than once, and was living "in sin" while mayor. McCain is working on multiple marriages, and I'm sure others are too. The point is, I don't think McCain being a POW qualifies him to be Commander in Chief. And I don't think Guliani being Mayor of NYC makes him an expert on terror. I look at the whole enchilada and pick from that. There are those that want Frist to fix health care because he's a doctor. He's a nice man, but if he could fix it, he already would have a plan that was so irresistible, it would be law today. I don't want him running the military or Foreign policy just because he was a doctor.
If it's not Newt, who then? I'm open for serious candidates.
Newt's divorce was so ugly that it would be easy to paint him as a horrible person. I doubt Newt could be elected.
Personally, I suspect we will nominate a classic dark horse. I suspect that person will be running against a Hillary/McCain ticket, or a Hillary/Powell ticket.
When he crashed yet another plane, this time into Vietnam, the minute he was found by the Cong, he pulled an "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?" kind of thing. Instead of just supplying them with his name, rank, and serial number, he told then that his father and grandfather were ADMIRALS! And yes, he also spilled his guts some more, not long after that.

I used to really LOVE and admire Newtie. I even have an autographed book of his. But long ago, that admiration began to wane and then turn into distaste. In this, I am NOT alone.
Newtie was GREAT as a backbencher. Most of us were more than willing to overlook his, shall we say rather unsavory, private life ( married his high school math teacher and then, divorced her in a shoddy way ), because of his seemingly staunch conservatism and '94 leadership.
Yes, he forced Clinton into the balanced budget; however, he also strapped on kneepads when he and the Toon had that televised love-fest. And then there was the closing down of Congress, which worked to Clinton's advantage. From then one, it was downhill all the way. He caved and kept on caving to Slick. But what can you expect, when Newt is the reverse side of the same coin Clinton is on?
Oh yes, Newt has FF type qualities......he and Ben Franklin , where morality ( lack thereof ) is concerned; not to mention being a lousy husband and father and adulterer.

Are you aware of the fact that Newt has been going around praising that IDIOT Bloomberg's insane plan to pay welfare recipients' money, for each completed chore, as a bribe, for feeding their kids, making sure their children go to school, they go to a doctor, etc.?

He took part in annual SHOWS, where mayors and N.Y.C. lawyers and politicos have been dressing up and putting on skits for many decades years. THIS IS NOTHING NEW!
