PAKISTANI President Pervez Musharraf today called for a ban on the "defamation of Islam" in a speech to the UN General Assembly in which he took a veiled swipe at Pope Benedict XVI for his remarks linking the Muslim faith to violence.
"We also need to bridge, through dialogue and understanding, the growing divide between the Islamic and Western worlds," General Musharraf told the 192-member assembly.
"It is imperative to end racial and religious discrimination against Muslims and to prohibit the defamation of Islam."
In an indirect reference to Pope Benedict XVI, he said, "It is most disappointing to see personalities of high standing oblivious of Muslim sensitivities at these critical moments".

The end of this slippery road is total surrender to Islam. There is no "dialogue" when a subject is prohibted to be discussed, analyzed, and criticized.
Of course, that is the aim of the Muslims.
Yeah, just as soon as there's a prohibition on defamation of Christians and Jews, Mushi.
Only if you're into immanentizing the eschaton. But when he goes, expect Pak to take a lurch to the bad.
And every schoolchild should say "There is no god but allah and mohammed (peace be upon him) is his prophet."
So long as they don't favor pasta in a can with some kind of reddish-yellow tomato-like flavoring that generates excess stomach acid just by walking past its aisle with a shopping cart.
Move the UN to Iran. Let see how far their diplomatic immunity last...................
You just converted to Islam and don't even know it.
Now you're getting into complex theological issues.
Are you happy yet, General?
[reality]: Musharraf is sucking up to the crazies back home, that's all. He's trying to keep his head attached to his shoulders.
Last night I watched an old movie called "The Nun's Story," and I thought to myself what a stark contrast between islam and Christianity. The nuns in the story embraced love and sacrifice for the good of all others. While in the Belgium Congo one of the nuns is brutally murdered by a native. The other natives are amazed that they were not all punished for the crime. Sister Luke (the main character), told them that "anger and revenge is not our way, forgiveness is."
Religion should enhance one's life not stifle it. Islam is evil.
I'm sick of hearing about Muslim sensibilities. They are just such a SENSITIVE group. Well I'm sensitive too. I'm offended at the beheadings, the flying of planes into buildings, the blowing up of civilians in dozens of countries. Let's talk about my sensibilities.
DOUBLE-DOG DITTOS TO THAT AND AMEN!!
Yeah but... I used quote marks!
Sorry but it is already there.....just will become more vocal like the rest of the savages, once Musharraf is offed.
I recently heard that in Indonesia, Religious Freedom is written into the constitution. Sounds great, right? Only trouble is the courts have interpreted that to mean Freedom To Practice Only Islam. Indonesian citizens can't convert to anything else.
Right. It's too early in the day or week to consider theic issues.
Well, he's obviously trying to save his head with this kind of rhetoric as it is.
Tell it to the Sharia judge.
Oh, just whip me, bury me, and throw stones at me, why don'tcha? ;)
Winnie goes on to say ...
Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome
It's interesting that no violent uprisings took place when winne said that.. The only answer is at that time the British Empire had it's boot on the throat of Islam.. the mistake was removing it and allowing it to raise to what it is today..
The Key Phrase in the overall statement is "must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men."
We need to heed Sir Wiston today as we heeded him in WWII
And this guy:
and this guy:
And... or maybe, to Musharraf, these guys are honoring Islam?
