Republicans appear to be gaining on the Democrats in the 2006 midterm campaign because of growing confidence in the economy, falling gas prices and President Bush's sustained political offensive on the terrorist threat, according to pollsters and campaign strategists. The most significant political movement in the past week or two has been in the battle for control of Congress. National preference polls on the so-called "generic ballot" question -- which party's candidate voters say they would choose -- show Republicans have narrowed the once-substantial lead Democrats held and are now trailing them by three percentage points, independent pollster John Zogby said Friday. Mr. Zogby credited the Republican Party's sudden political turnaround to "the president's focus on the war on terrorism, a rebound among his own base," and the Democrats' failure to lay out a clear plan of their own on "how are we're going to get out of Iraq and what they would do about terrorism that's better than the Republicans." Democrats "are not giving their Democratic base what it needs to hear on those issues," Mr. Zogby said. "Republicans are severely wounded. The Democrats should be crushing them, and they are not."

I asked Peach about his chances the other day and was not surprised to learn there isn't anyone of note she could name who might be waiting to take him on in the primaries. Of course, it's still 2 years away.
I might add, that as bad as he's been, he still retains a 90% rating, which makes him much the more desired candidate than any democrat. Old Fritz was not conservative.
After his Gang of 14 antics, followed by the anti-torture bill, and now his latest shenanigans with the Geneva Convention/CIA legislation, I truly despise him.
IF he runs in '08, I will do my best to expose this guy for the nut that he is, and I'm sure thousands of his unhappy constituents will do the same.
At his current rate he will become totally irrelevant and disappear just like his "Keating 5" buddie Dennis Deconcini, also from AZ.
of course not.....I meant that if anyone on FR supports him or at least doesn't hate him will not post on FR cause they know they will be devoured....
Pubs are looking better in the House but the Senate may be going the other direction. With Dems competitive or winning in Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island, and now Tennessee, Virginia, and Missouri, people may have been wrong in assuming that the Senate is the safer chamber.
Redo your algebra. Using your figures, he has 90% Republican support in Arizona.
Nice to see the nice lead by Mfume in that poll....lol.
If he can't win a primary in the Republican party and yet can do well in a general election then where are those votes coming from? Could it be DEMOCRATS? Not likely. He has a 10 percent ACLU rating. Democrats don't vote for people with a 10 percdnt ACLU rating. But wait a minute... those are not votes you're counting.. those are poll results. It has to be coming from people who are polled but don't vote.
..of course.....and you don't have to be an ass about it... I was talking about polls and popularity and how they reflect on his numbers....who knows....but I quote polls just like anyone here does.....don't you see when Bush's numbers go up in the polls there are several posts here about it....I don't use them only when they are favorable to me....so everything I said can be backed up by numerous polls and articles......period....I didn't say he was going to be elected...I merely pointed out that he is popular amongst the masses....more so then FR....and the is pure fact........
McCain does not have 75% approval in Arizona. He has fought such conservatives as Goldwater and Graf, supported Democrat governor Napolitano, and will likely support her again. He is weak on immigration, and he is strong on John McCain. Remember, he is no Arizonan. He is an Eastern elitist, and bumbling Annapolis student, who has made Arizona his home.
...you sound like you are campaigning...and making the same mistake many FR's do; changing the subject cause you don't like him.....but i'm not talking about his merits here.....I'm not cheering for him or highlighting his career...I simply stated that he is popular in his home state and fairly popular nationwide. Period...not good, bad or indifferent....and not only polls but even conservatives will tell you the same.....
I'm from Arizona and I sincerely question your argument. Arizona is filled with retirees and with former military. Niether group has much love for McCain. Then there is the border issue, and his questionable loyalty to Republican and conservative causes. And, it must be said, next to McCain George Bush is a genius. Finally, Arizona Republicans are generally conservative, just like the folks in South Carolina who sent McCain packing in 2000.
....ok....well go to google, put in the words "McCain" and "popularity" and you'll see the articles and polls I'm quoting....I"m not just making it up....really
"As gas prices fell, the stock market was rising, with the Dow Jones industrial average soaring to 11,560 Friday, 162 points from its all-time high, that boosted worker pensions -- and a consumer confidence survey showed Americans were "in a decidedly more optimistic mood," the Ipsos poll reported Friday.
The Republicans' improving poll numbers were also reflected in a number of tighter House and Senate races, while a separate Zogby poll showed that Republicans in three high-profile Senate races -- in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio -- had improved their poll numbers significantly in just the past week or two.
Much of the party's gain was the result of Republicans coming home to their party as Mr. Bush focused on the issues that most deeply divide the country -- Iraq and the war on terrorism.
"The base is finally coming around. Democratic intensity has been strong for the last year, but Republican intensity all of a sudden has increased," said Republican campaign strategist John Brabender, who is advising Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania in his re-election campaign.
"Some of the positive things that are happening in the economy are starting to cause some excitement among Republicans," Mr. Brabender said. "
The economy is doing well, but has actually been doing well for some time. But ...
THE BEST REASON TO VOTE REPUBLICAN IS THE DEMOCRATS.
Broken-glass time, Republicans! Save the Congress!
When the Amendment wasn't around were the state legislatures able to hold the senators more accountable?
