Republicans gain in midterm polls

By Donald Lambro

Republicans appear to be gaining on the Democrats in the 2006 midterm campaign because of growing confidence in the economy, falling gas prices and President Bush's sustained political offensive on the terrorist threat, according to pollsters and campaign strategists. The most significant political movement in the past week or two has been in the battle for control of Congress. National preference polls on the so-called "generic ballot" question -- which party's candidate voters say they would choose -- show Republicans have narrowed the once-substantial lead Democrats held and are now trailing them by three percentage points, independent pollster John Zogby said Friday. Mr. Zogby credited the Republican Party's sudden political turnaround to "the president's focus on the war on terrorism, a rebound among his own base," and the Democrats' failure to lay out a clear plan of their own on "how are we're going to get out of Iraq and what they would do about terrorism that's better than the Republicans." Democrats "are not giving their Democratic base what it needs to hear on those issues," Mr. Zogby said. "Republicans are severely wounded. The Democrats should be crushing them, and they are not."

"Mr. Zogby said. "Republicans are severely wounded. The Democrats should be crushing them, and they are not."

This is exactly why zombie is so dangerous to the rat. The GOP never really was "severely wounded". zombie and the rest of the liars are feeding the rat a hot steaming plate of bull shiite. If they keep listening to zombie and his gang of liars, which they will, we can't lose.

Feingold came out today and denounced Hillary and said he can beat her in the demo primary. With Liberman thrown under the wheels of the bus, and Pelosi and her troops
taking control of the west and Dean on the east, they are slowly destroying any conservative demo bas they had, and most of the undecideds were middle of the road, and they are now gooing to see the demorat implode, especially if we here pound it home when ever we can.

...well that is too bad....life exists outside FR so McCain's hatred here does not extend to the U.S. as whole if overwhelming numbers....he always does fairly well in most polls....like Gulianni, he could most likely not win a primary, but both would do fairly well in a general election cause they appeal to many people....again, outside the framework of FR......that is just fact.....whether you want to believe it or not.....

This election coverage as a horse race to sell polling data is just malarky. There is apparently so little news that all they have to report is the results of push polls. The CCM needs to be called on this issue daily.

What's a Feingold, some type of metal disorder related to lack of a firm base in reality?

I know what is happening inside my GOP members in my State and in Arizona, McCain is being attacked daily in all forums in both Florida and Arizona and all Conservative talk shows I visit, and the backing he once had will begin to evade him when the true force of another candidate is put forward.

I hate to say it (wait, no I don't!) but seriously, has anybody heard a single "plan" from the Demcrats on anything? (Other than plans to impeach W?) It's not just a Republican mantra...I haven't heard a single Democratic Plan to accomplish anything.

Cancer face will not make it much longer. I think his cancer has entered his brain, and his swollen face and facial nerve damage speak volumes. This man is sick, both physically and mentally.

Even in polls tracking majority opinion of Americans, Americans that know little of his positions but simply express name recognition and react to favorable press coverage that would NOT be existent in a presidential run, his stock has been steadily falling. Rudy's remains reasonably high, but McCain has peaked. The two used to be in a neck to neck tie in those polls.

Clearest evidence this is so is that Kristol broke with with McCain this weekend. Not simply because he supported the President's position, but that he actually addressed this was damning to his '08 chances. For kristol that was a telling remark, especially since he's been stumping for Mccain since the 2000 race.

McCain would not do well in a general election. Not only has he lost conservatives, not only would the press turn on him, but he's losing the Republican elite power makers. And this latest position will not endear him to the moderate Dems/Indy's he has hoped to court.

I don't doubt that....I don't like alot of what he says, but you need to explore outside the conservative realm. McCain has broad popularity at about 60% and his disapproval ratings among all camps is half of Hillary's and McCain scores low among the far right....but honestly, for moderates, Dems and many mod conservatives he still has support........Goggle "McCain" and "popularity" or something close to that....you'll see he is actually doing better then most think.....we should be very worried... cause outside your normal conservative or Republican circles, he is gaining some support.....his problem is he can't get passed the primaries....I would never ever take my adversary lightly

McCain "is very popular to mainstream America"

Unfortunately true. I have a friend who's a dem, and she thinks McCain is a "centrist" who would bring the country together. I try to tell her about the damage done to the constitution by campaign finance reform, and to our security by his "coddle terrorists" stance, and she just won't hear it.

This seems to be consistent with other evidence as to the recent trend in favor of the GOP. But no specific numbers here.

BTW, Zogby may bill himself as "an independent pollster," but he's a Democrat at heart. So his admission that Republicans are gaining is significant.

It is Lindsay Graham who is courting disaster with his senate seat, not McCain.

Really? He's not up for reelection this year.

Someone correct me if I am wrong. However, historically if the GOP was 3 points behind on election day (Per the generic preference polls) the GOP would actually pick up seats or retain what they had. I suspect the reason for this is Republican Likely Voters are much more likely to vote.

well then do some research on Google.....I agree alot is name recognition....hell, most Americans have no idea where most pols stand.....and I agree that Rudy is more popular, I even like him though not his social stances...and Kristol hates the Pres position on the terror war being a neo con, so this is one issue he agrees on.....
.....hey, I'm not stumping for McCain....but if you just look at some polls nationwide.....and articles regarding McCain.....you'll see that he still garners favor....though he is so unsteady and a media whore....I just don't think his chances are all that good

Graham is up for re-election in 2008. Wish it was sooner, but since we don't have a Republican willing to run against him at this time, maybe its best that we wait until we find the right person who can beat Pandsey.
