The base is eagerly waiting for someone to step up to the plate. If someone does they'll coast to the nomination

I nominate Tony Snow for '08. We see how good he is with the media, and his views are very much in conservative line of thought, but he knows how to sell his views to the public.

for McCain it is "Country be damned! I want mine!"

And it turns out Colin Powell is cut from exactly the same cloth.

Yeah i totally agree. I am "almost" from the South, Miami/The Keys.

South Fla. is now divided with Dade County and portions of broward part of the third world and from Jupiter to S. broward an adjunct of NYC/NJ.

We in the Keys are just rebellious and always have been. Fla. isn't really considered a Southern state until you get North of I-4.

The only skiing I have ever seen was done on the water.

Live, perhaps, but you must admit that you've seen that poor schmuck, known forever as "the agony of defeat," on a million episodes of "The Wild Wild World of Sports" (as Slim Pickens famously misnamed the long running ABC show).

I understand you concerns about "the South"...but, look at what the MSM has done in these last 6 years...

They (and the Dixie Chicks) have made it seem like anyone from Texas is a redneck MORON...

IOW, they are saying that what Jeff Foxworthy says is actually TRUE about Texans.

Hi sleuth! I agree with you. It's important both Santorum and Allen win their elections.

Even the New Hampshire newspaper came out with an editorial blasting McCain for his stance on this interrogation thing.

Remember the Republican convention 2004, just after Zell Miller trashed the real democrats, McCain was with Tom Brokaw defending dems & said that Zell Miller's speech could hurt republicans. History proved otherwise.

Yours is a disturbingly plausible theory about what McCain is up to.

Excellent rememberance Snugs.

Sadly though, I'm afraid we won't see the likes of Baroness Thatcher (or Ronald Reagan) again for a long, long time.

thank you!!

the one of Ann- she opened a gift from someone and said, "Oh what a GREAT gift!" then she started putting it away...

I said "Ann, hold it up and let me get a picture of you with it." She said, "Oh, Great idea, and I expect to see it platered all over Free Republic!"

LOL!

I told her us FREEPers worship her, she said, "I worship THEM!"

so many great stories to tell about the night...

I got my picture taken with he- but not with MY camera... so I am at the mercy of others to send me the two pics that I know of! LOL!

One is an "official" pic taken by the Christian Coalition of GA, and the other is one my friend took while she and I were just chit-chatting....she was so gracious and warm....

she asked me what I do, etc.. hugged me so much- told me I was "cute"...LOL!

even during the event- I was cheering for Mike and she turned to me and said "I LOVE YOU!"

so much - co much- co much more to tell... just a great night..

I am still letting it all sink in!

No "Dayside"? I hope that's true, because IMHO it's a huge waste of time. What new show for Jane Skinner? In the Dayside time-slot?

I found some info, snugs. You;ll find it interesing

On January 10, 1781, the Second Continental Congress created the office of Secretary of Foreign Affairs to head a "Department of Foreign Affairs".

On July 27, 1789, George Washington signed a congressional bill into law reauthorizing an executive Department of Foreign Affairs headed by a Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Congress then passed another law giving certain additional domestic responsibilities to the new Department and changing its name to the Department of State and the name of head of the department to the Secretary of State, and Washington approved this act on September 15, 1789.

The new domestic duties assigned to the newly renamed department were receipt, publication, distribution, and preservation of laws of the United States, custody of the Great Seal of the United States, authentication of copies and preparation of commissions of executive branch appointments, and finally custody of the books, papers, and records of the Continental Congress including the Constitution itself and the Declaration of Independence.

The title of Secretary of State is British in origin. At the time of American independence, "Secretary of State" was a title given to senior members of the King's cabinet (e.g., "Secretary of State in Charge of Colonies"). The position of "Secretary of State of the United States" was thus intended to be the most general and important office in the U.S. government, after the Presidency.
