Serious E.Coli Outbreak - FDA Issue Alert - 50 Ill

Scientists believe E.coli bacteria might have been absorbed by the lettuce plant’s root system. If that happens, washing the lettuce won’t do any good—the E.coli is already growing inside.

But Jim Gorney of the United Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Association says all the theories are just that—theories.

I wonder if I had a small bout of food poisoning?

You may have had some type of food poisoning. The stomach 'bug' that you think you catch is usually some type of food borne illness NOT a virus.

Two summers ago, we had a small (but virulent) outbreak of salmonella in my area. It came from ready diced, fresh Roma tomatos that a local convenience chain used. Multiple stores in SW Pa. were involved and about 80 or so people got sick enough to seek medical treatment (no mention of how many had 'mild' cases and didn't seek treatment). It was found that the tomatos came from Mexico (surprise!!!) and were contaminated before they got into the processing plants (and well before the convenience stores).

I did change my 'fast food' eating (on rare occasions that I have not other choice). I don't get any salads, or burgers with any lettuce, tomato, onions, etc. Only highly processed condiments (ketchup, mustard, pickles, etc.) The 'fresh' items that make their way to the fast food eateries make too many stops along the way.

FDA Investigation; Packaged Fresh Spinach Recall

A statement from Natural Selection Foods, LLC.

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA; CALIF; September 15, 2006: We are aware of reports of illnesses in multiple states nationwide including one death, possibly related to e coli contamination in fresh spinach. We have been working closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the California Department of Health Services (CDHS) to try to understand the scope and locate the source of any contamination.

In an effort to minimize risk and afford the maximum possible protection to consumers, the FDA and CDHS have recommended that fresh spinach that is currently in the market be recalled. We have decided to voluntarily recall all of the products which contain spinach in all the brands we pack with “Best if Used by Dates” of August 17th through October 1st. Brands include: Dole, Natural Selection Foods, Pride of San Juan, Earthbound Farm, Bellissima, Rave Spinach, Emeril, Sysco, O Organic, Fresh Point, River Ranch, Superior, Nature’s Basket, Pro-Mark, Compliments, Trader Joe’s, Ready Pac, Jansal Valley, Cheney Brothers, Coastline, D’Arrigo Brothers, Green Harvest, Mann, Mills Family Farm, Premium Fresh, Snoboy, The Farmer’s Market, Tanimura & Antle, President’s Choice, Cross Valley, Riverside Farms. Products include spinach and any salad with spinach in a blend, both retail and foodservice products. Products that do not contain spinach are not part of this recall. We are working with the FDA and CDHS to offer consumers the greatest possible protection with the limited information available.

Products were distributed within the United States nationwide, Canada and Mexico. No illnesses have been reported to date outside of the U.S.

E. coli O157:H7 causes diarrhea, often with bloody stools. Although most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, some people can develop a form of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS). HUS is most likely to occur in young children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. The condition can lead to serious kidney damage and even death. If consumers are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact should be made with their local health provider.

The health and safety of those who consume our products is our top priority today and every day. We remain absolutely committed to providing a safe, nutritious product to all of our customers and we will continue to work with the FDA and CDHS on their ongoing investigation. Because if they provide a county, town, or city; some enterprising individual might look up an obituary and use deductive logic. This would have identified the produce company, and their legal counsel. Just a guess.

Seems it was California-grown produce that accounted for the outbreak. I dont understand why Wisconsin has accounted for over 30% of the illnesses. You seem very concerned, did you partake of bagged spinach?

I take the stuff to work almost every day. And will continue to do so when this thing blows over. Also there seemed to be a cluster of cases (20+) here plus the fatality.

My biggest concern, how does this stuff happen in the first place and what's going to be done about it?

Almost obvious that it was grossly poor sanitation somewhere in the growing, processing or distribution channels.

Hey Badray, just a heads up. Check post 285...it lists the brands that this spinach is packed under. I know you also live near the 'Burgh so note that 'Farmers Market' (I amd guessing the same FM that Giant Iggle sells) is listed. You might want to check your lables...

The problem is, and was, people not washing produce; or it was contaminated during the processing. Or the consumers contaminated it themselves, which is most likely.

You keep repeating that, but apparently some are not getting it - so I am repeating it yet again for those that mised it the first 100 times or so it was said by you, me, and a bunch of others.
