my understanding is that it is passed thru fecal matter (animal or human) contacting the crop or in the processing of the food. Always wash your produce before consuming it and be wary of "organic" (IMHO, the greatest farce foisted upon the American public)
And healthcare suppliers too.
"....and be wary of "organic" (IMHO, the greatest farce foisted upon the American public)"
You got that right!
The label "organic" is easily obtained but not well regulated.
Now even the basic sanitation is in question.....
I have started a new thread due to the partial brand name list being released.
The thread is here...

That's a bit of heaven, hmm? It's good that you don't suffer from lowered expectations or anything like that.
"Goin' up to the Spinach in the sky,
That's what I'll eat when I die.
When I die and they lay me to rest
I'm goin' to eat the plant that is best."
(semi-Norman Greenbaum)
And Sweetpea was an analyst and Olive Oyl was androgynous.
There are big cut out people in these fields as you drive to Monterey from Salinas, reminding you that immigrants are working in the fields.
The RAT media was quick to blast FEMA for its "slow" reponse to Katrina. I don't see them praising the rapid action of the FDA in getting the word out nationally on this spinach. Their quick response saved many lives and this American says "thank you".
Si Senor...I washed my hands...
Thanks. I appreciate the ping.
I just checked and the brand I have is Fresh Express and the date is August 23rd.
It's typically the young, the old, and those whose health is compromised that suffer any ill affects.
Ooops. I just checked the calendar. I do fall into that category. LOL
Wiykd a water-bkeacg sikytuibjukk E, coli?
Late news reports indicate the germ is in the structure of the plant and won't wash off. I imagine cooking it in soup for at least 15 minutes would work. Fifteen minutes boiling will even kill resistant Shighella (sp?), a very nasty gut bug.
Friday evening news indicated that there are now more than half the states reporting the illness. They also listed 5 brands. One brand is sold at Fresh Foods, and I bought their brand of salad greens (not spinach), before I saw the news broadcast.
You've got it! :>)
Thanks for the ping Kyla.
I've purchased their products before as well because they appeared to me to be a nice fresh product. I happen to love baby spinach salad. I actually have a hard plastic box from HEB which is supposed to be organic in my fridge right now which I had already used part of but am hesitant to eat the rest.
They say on the news wash your lettuce even if it's prepackaged, BUT, I don't see how water is going to wash away e-coli. Trader Joe's used to have a vegetable wash which, of course, I can't get here. I guess I will stop eating lettuce and spinach completely.
I personally think it's the hygiene of the people they hire. Oh well, get used to living in a third world country because that's the direction we're heading.
After donning my tinfoil hat, I thought about how easy it would be to put that into the fresh food chain.
So why are you not. We need more posting police.
As long as we're not worried about calories with this one, I'm thinking blue cheese might also work great with that too. This also might be a good take-along recipe since it marinates.
Thank you so much for the update on the brand names involved.
50 ill, 1 death.
A problem, to be sure - we want to trust what we eat.
Lots of MSM, (follow-the-rest-of-the-media) hype for a very, very minor problem compared to what else is going on.
Food poisoning kills many hundreds each year, and hundreds of thousands in the world.
